Position Summary/Description:

This position is within the Facilities Engineering group. It will provide full project management and engineering services for projects (concentrating on mechanical and electrical) within the University's high containment labs and animal facilities. Duties include scope development with campus users, contract negotiation, project review, and project management to ensure these projects are delivered on schedule and within budget. Additional duties include in-house design in area of expertise, sealing engineering drawings as required, providing technical support to Construction Shops, Building Services, and Environment, Health & Safety. The project manager must understand NC design, bid, build, processes, be familiar with building infrastructure systems and possess the ability to execute complex technical projects.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills:

Substantial knowledge of professional engineering theory, techniques, practices, procedures, building codes and laws, as well as skills in applying these for problem-solving, system design, maintenance protocols, and identification for energy conservation opportunities. Thorough knowledge of state and federal rules, and regulations, governing design and construction of building systems; thorough knowledge of agency/university practices, procedures and principles. Experience in engineering design and construction practices. Ability to review designs and interpret all related plans and specifications, estimate costs, and to technically direct others and review and evaluate their work. Must have the ability to cope with the management of multiple projects with established completion dates and budget limitations. Must know the NC Mechanical Code, NC Fire Code and National Electric Code and corresponding NC revisions. Excellent skills in writing and verbal communication, as well as ability to lead, manage, and document small group meeting series.

Preferred :

Minimum of seven years progressive experience in engineering project design and management. Specific experience with High Containment Labs, Animal Care Facilities, Center for Disease Control (CDC), Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) and U.S. Department of Agriculture and Public Health Service standards and regulations.
