Summary of Position
NRECA's Business & Technology Strategies (BTS) investigates using cutting-edge methods and technologies to provide innovative solutions to electric cooperative utilities, in providing safe, cost-effective, reliable, resilient, secure and clean electricity to their consumers.
We are looking for an engineering undergraduate student who is looking for a deeper understanding of the factors and challenges that are currently affecting the electric industry at large, and the way these trends are affecting America's Electric Cooperatives. By participating in projects in the areas of basic research, report editing/drafting and engagement with the Distributed Energy Resources (DER) & Generation Member Advisory Groups, our intern will learn about the electricity industry and unique challenges facing electric generation and transmission cooperatives.
Assist with reviewing microgrid feasibility reports.
Assist with basic research from DER & Generation Member Advisory Group meetings.
Update key research energy databases.
Review relevant technical documents on climate change, carbon capture, sequestration, and utilization for a future carbon constrained electricity market.
Perform detailed research on our existing database and provide updates to the technology roadmap spreadsheet. The database includes renewable energy and non-dispatchable resources including energy storage and carbon utilization technologies.
Assist in the update of the slide deck of power points and word documents that discuss the latest carbon technologies for a final member centric product.
Write a report and create an accompanying presentation on obstacles to commercialization of cost-effective carbon capture technologies.
Required Qualifications and Skills
A current Junior/rising Senior seeking an undergraduate degree in Engineering.
Ability to learn new systems and processes and quickly incorporate them into the daily work.
Ability to organize and manage time effectively.
Pays close attention to detail and review work for quality.
A strong team player with good interpersonal and relationship building skills.
Strong communication skills both orally and in writing.
Applies good judgement related to escalating issues and requesting assistance when needed.
Ability to operate various office equipment such as personal computer, copier, printer, fax machine or other job-related equipment.
Experience in using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
Experience with renewable energy design and modeling software
Prior internship experience in the electric energy industry
Essential Physical Requirements
The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading.
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
