Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Energy Analysis & Environmental Impacts (EAEI) Division has two openings for Postdoctoral Scholars to join the team.

We perform innovative research to achieve clean, affordable, and accessible energy systems.

In this role, you will participate in several multi-disciplinary projects that combine process engineering, techno-economic analysis, and technology roadmapping to understand the potential of emerging negative emissions technologies and energy storage technologies including hydrogen storage, thermal energy storage, electrochemical processes, carbon dioxide capture and storage, and waste heat utilization. This position will conduct rigorous process engineering and prospective techno-economic analysis for benchmarking and modeling system performance metrics (upfront and running costs, energy balance, thermodynamics, water efficiency, scalability, operation logistics). These metrics will be used to screen both emerging technologies and viable end-uses, as well as support optimization of processes and integration at a regional level.

What You Will Do:

• Contribute process modeling in software such as Matlab, R, Aspen, Python, and ProSim and conduct techno-economic analysis to evaluate potential impacts of deploying targeted technologies in key end-use applications and sectors.

• Collaborate in a multidisciplinary team environment, including backgrounds in biology, chemistry, earth sciences, statistics, physics, energy technologies, materials science, and computer science.

• Analyze and summarize data and present findings at internal lab meetings and scientific conferences.

• Publish in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to scientific research papers and reports.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

• Participate in routine Sustainable Energy System Group meetings.

• Assist with mentoring of interns.

• Ensure that results are translated to industry impact.

• Contribute to research proposals and grants as needed.

What is Required:

• Recent Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or relevant field.

• Strong programming experience and familiarity with software versioning systems for process engineering.

• Knowledge of green chemistry, thermodynamics, system optimization, heat integration and materials for gas separation and energy storage technologies a plus.

• Proven ability to publish results in relevant journals.

• Ability to work in an integrated diverse team environment.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

• Interest in solving science challenges, particularly in energy.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience working on energy technologies such as carbon capture, energy storage and integration with renewable energy systems.

• Keen interest in multi-disciplinary research to influence policy and technology development.

Notes:

• This is a full-time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

• This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

• Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
