Berkeley Lab's Energy Geosciences Division (EGD) is seeking an exceptional geoscientist with a strong track record in scientific vision, innovative research, program development, and program coordination in geothermal energy technologies. We are considering appointments at the Staff Scientist level and, for exceptionally well-qualified candidates, also at the Senior Scientist level.
We welcome candidates with an interest in the interplay between geoscience, clean energy strategies, policy, economics, and environmental justice. The successful candidate will have access to world-class computational and experimental facilities, including EGD's including EGD's unique Geosciences Measurement Facility, which has extensive resources for advanced field characterization and monitoring.
What You Will Do:
- Lead and expand a vibrant, extramurally supported research area in EGD, with a broad portfolio of research directions centered on geothermal resource exploration and assessment, enhanced geothermal systems, geothermal applications for heating and cooling, subsurface thermal energy storage, innovative uses of geothermal, and more.
- Develop scientific vision and programmatic goals for the geothermal research program, aligned with the interests of DOE's Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO).
- Coordinate response to external funding opportunities, develop new research agendas, and explore potential unsolicited funding avenues.
- Foster and maintain effective relationships with DOE program managers and other clients, providing technical support to GTO as needed.
- Act as the spokesperson for the geothermal research program, both internally and externally.
- Engage with clients (DOE and industry) and professional colleagues through participation in meetings, advisory committees, and other communication channels.
- Regularly communicate with EGD's scientific staff to discuss opportunities, initiatives, and strategies.
- Provide leadership, supervision, and mentorship to EGD staff and technical subcontractors involved in geothermal energy technologies.
- Foster connections and collaborations with the international geothermal research community.
- Conduct cutting-edge scientific research in energy geosciences, focusing on the areas mentioned above.
- Serve as the principal investigator, coordinating and managing research projects.
- Publish research findings as the primary or corresponding author in refereed journals, and present work extensively at conferences and workshops.
- Collaborate with and/or lead interdisciplinary groups, fostering collaborations across the Lab and external institutions.
- Independently raise funds for your own research group at Berkeley Lab.
- Interact with Cyclotron Road, particularly with cohorts involved in geothermal technologies, leveraging their entrepreneurial program to advance impactful technology projects.
- Mentor junior scientists and post-docs.
Additional for Senior Scientist:
- Leverage international reputation to advance the geothermal research program.
- Provide scientific oversight for EGD scientific and research programs; monitor the direction of programs and establish goals and objectives to meet DOE/EGD goals.
- Suggest and implement management directives to enhance the credibility and stature of EGD.
What is Required:
- Ph.D. or equivalent experience in hydrogeology, geology, geophysics, geochemistry, or a related engineering field, with a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience.
- Demonstrated ability and experience in developing and managing high-impact research programs and projects.
- Proficiency in developing and applying complex and innovative methods, tools, and approaches in geoscience applications.
- Strong expertise and experience in geothermal energy technologies.
- Technical and managerial proficiency in independently conceiving and designing research plans and effectively presenting results in scientific forums.
- Ability to serve in advisory roles to government agencies, industry groups, and other stakeholders.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to synthesize research results into reports, conference papers, and refereed journal articles, as well as present findings at conferences, workshops, and other forums.
- Proven ability to work with clients and professional colleagues, manage research projects, prepare funding proposals, and independently attract research funding.
- Record of successful mentorship and supervision
Additional Senior Scientist Required Qualifications:
- Extensive years of experience beyond the customary highest degree in hydrogeology, geology, geophysics, geochemistry (or related subject).
- Demonstrated excellence in the field, with notable scientific or technical achievements that define scientific frontiers and directions.
- Internationally recognized as an authority and leader in Geoscience and Geothermal Energy who have made major contributions to the Laboratory and the broader scientific/engineering community through their leadership and creativity.
- Experience providing guidance to professionals in the same field and collaborating with professionals in other fields.
- Experience leading significant projects/programs with considerable latitude in defining approach.

Notes:
- This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
- This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
- This position is expected to pay $15,000.00 - $20,000.00/month, which fits within the full salary range of $10,084.00 - $29,263.00/month for the Staff & Sr. Scientist classifications. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
