The Department of Radiology at the Stanford Precision Health and Integrated Diagnostics (PHIND) Center, is establishing the first dedicated 3D printing Shared User Facility on its campus to support the research enterprise of the university. We are seeking a Director to build a user base and community of users that can design and make reliable physical parts to support their research needs. The Director will manage, maintain and grow the Additive Manufacturing and Prototyping Facility (AMPF) which currently consists of state-of-the-art, manufacturing-quality, commercial 3D printers (Carbon M2, Carbon L1 and a Carbon Smart Part Washer). This advanced 3D printing facility will enable digital design, prototyping, and small-scale production as an integrated innovation hub shared facility that will be a key pillar for innovation and commercialization for investigators spanning the Stanford campus and Silicon Valley. The new facility will also feed into the overall goals of PHIND including fundamentally revolutionizing healthcare leading to better and more productive lives for individuals. We are looking for a business-minded, application engineer to work with faculty, staff, and students to design and make digitally the physical products needed to support their research needs to help usher in a new era of rapid product iteration and innovation, especially end-use quality products designed and made on a scalable product manufacturing platform.
Duties include:
Serve as property operations / maintenance point of contact for facilities' issues in complex facilities as defined above; initiate work requests, monitor completion; manage maintenance and renovations budget; coordinate and monitor routine maintenance services completion (trash, utilities, custodial, pest control, long term preservation, inspections, grounds, landscapes, alarms, systems & equipment), suggest metrics, monitor and report related trends; perform condition assessments on appearance, equipment, or troubleshooting ( formulated by another group, FSM), analyze results and decide status; identify and establish preventive maintenance plan; coordinate & integrate utility usage/optimization(monitor usage, gather info, provide recommendations, follow-up, shutdown requirements), analyze date and provide recommendations; coordinate, direct, inspect and approve contract work, third party vendors; identify, recommend & implement building operations & process modifications to the facility for increased productivity and/or cost reduction, manage related budget; coordinate maintenance logistics (to avoid faculty conflicts, events).
Handle property administration by troubleshooting, completing tagging, data entry & inventory; completing purchase orders, receiving; completing record keeping; establishing tracking system, gathering information and, information gathering and support for space allocation decision makers.
Implement facility security programs by developing procedures/practices, distributing keys, providing building access, monitoring access records, assessing security infrastructure needs (security cameras, interlocks, alarms); and assessing and changing access schedules
Complete project coordination by: performing the assigned tasks within department projects; acting as a project coordinator/liaison; and overseeing and executing projects (limited to small, local projects), including their organization, scheduling, budgeting, and implementation.
Serve as safety management coordinator by: correcting identified safety issues, performing root cause analysis, identifying and tracking corrective actions; tracking chemical inventory, disposal, hazardous waste; developing, coordinating, evaluating and ensuring compliance with disposal procedures in laboratory settings; developing and conducting safety training and/or new employee facility orientation; and maintaining and participating in emergency preparedness, recovery and business continuity coordination
Coordinate communications services (network administration, desktop support, primary troubleshooting, and telephony liaison); provide updates, alerts, notifications to building occupants, including websites, phones; and oversee mailing services, shipping and delivery.
Coordinate space management and planning activities including: analyzing moves for minimal disruption; move coordination; space inventory; space allocation tracking; specifying set-ups; maximizing space utilization; providing input into facilities renewal model; and capital plan implementation (as assigned).
Director will manage, maintain and grow the Additive Manufacturing and Prototyping Facility (AMPF) user base and tools.
Oversee the proper use of a fleet of Carbon printers and other supporting equipment within the facility.
Provide guidance on materials selection, part geometry, print orientation, support generation, and post-processing for users of this facility to enable them to product parts suitable for experimentation.
Assist investigators with experimental design, provide technical leadership, and coordination of laboratory activities and conceptualizing and constructing prototypes made digitally and physical products iteration and innovation.
Contribute to the management, design, engineering, construction, and installation phases of a major research project related to 3D printing.
Develop, modify, or enhance 3D models for 3D printing in support of engineering or research work.
Provide technical leadership for a major installation, and order materials, tooling, and supplies.
Develop, test, and evaluate new methods and protocols for use in research activities; document activities, workflow, and produce system documentation.
Establish workshops and learning sessions focused on the latest design technologies and software, including generative design programs (CAD, Altair Inspire, Fusion 360 Generative, Creo Generative), lattice engines (nTopology, Carbon Lattice Engine), parametric modeling (Rhino/Grasshopper), and VR modeling technologies (Gravity Sketch).
Modify and adapt standard operating protocols and procedures (SOPs) including videos, written instructions, and visual guides.
Ensure the printer rooms are organized and clean at all times
Effectively manage training for collaborators, develop online training tools, and attentively manage inventory.
Build and maintain a user base at Stanford and with external investigators, which will require outreach and marketing.
Develop a sustainable business model and forecast income and costs based on utilization, maintenance, supplies, and projected growth.

FACILITY OVERVIEW
Additive Manufacturing and Prototyping Facility (AMPF)
AMPF is a new advanced 3D printing and digital design, prototyping, and small-scale production innovation hub facility as part of the PHIND shared advanced research platforms at Stanford. The facility houses a suite of commercial and research grade continuous liquid interface production (CLIP)-based 3D printing systems and post-processing equipment from Carbon for printing polymeric microstructures using single advanced polymeric resins. These materials include elastomers; high-strength, high-impact thermoset polyurethanes; and medical- and dental grade resins, such as the world's first FDA-approved resin for dentures. AMPF also houses the world's first multi-resin and very high viscosity resin compatible vat-based 3D printer, designed and develop at Stanford, referred to as the direct injection CLIP printer (iCLIP). The iCLIP printer enables new approaches to complex multi-material part designs including new microfluidic devices and new types of interposer and cooling designs for back end of the line (BEOL) packaging concepts for advanced microelectronics applications.
Additionally, CLIP combines the high-resolution of projection micro-stereolithography with fast print speed, thereby achieving micrometer print resolution at 103 times faster than other high-resolution 3D printing technologies. iCLIP's unique resin injection architecture enables printing highly viscous resins, further widening printable geometries and materials. The available technology provides the high resolution needed to enable manufacturing of exquisitely detailed, latticed, and gradient 3D structures, for general production needs as well as BEOL packing, multi-chip integration, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), energy storage platforms, optoelectronic, components, microelectronics, and biomedical devices. Further, access to the latest design technologies and software, including generative design programs (CAD, Altair Inspire, Fusion 360 Generative, Creo Generative), lattice engines (nTopology, Carbon Lattice Engine), parametric modeling (Rhino/Grasshopper), and VR modeling technologies (Gravity Sketch) is provided to users. These extensive resources enable optimization of part design in the cloud before direct production, without the need to mold and prototype (saving time and cost) to facilitate the innovation and commercialization process by enabling rapid product concepts to be realized on the means of production using materials that have the properties to be final parts. This facility is already becoming a key pillar for design, innovation, and commercialization for investigators spanning the Stanford campus and Silicon Valley.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with vat photopolymerization or other 3D printing techniques.
Experience with chemical fume hoods and hazardous waste management.
Experience with business development, inventory, and financial management.
Knowledge of polymer science and/or photochemistry.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree and five years related, demonstrated technical facilities management experience, or a combination of education and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
Analytical skills to analyze and track complex space, equipment and financial data.
Interpersonal skills, mature judgment required to interact effectively with a broad range of people, including faculty and vendors, both individually and in groups.
Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects with competing priorities, meet deadlines and project plans with short- and long-term end dates.
Working knowledge of applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project.
Experience working with internal and external vendors and services contracting.
Background knowledge of safe handling and disposal of chemicals and hazardous waste; emergency preparedness plans and their implementation; and property administration specific to PO tracking, receiving, and inventory control.
Extensive experience applying multidisciplinary scientific principles and practices to perform experimental design and coordinate laboratory activity.
Experience in computer aided 3D design (CAD) such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion360, and/or Netfabb.
In-depth understanding and experience with analysis and interpretation of research data, and ability to recognize and resolve irregularities and invalid results.
Demonstrated experience with and ability to organize data and develop models allowing for integration and display of data.
Ability to provide technical leadership and coordinate major installation, materials, inventory, tooling, and supplies; ability to work with scientific or research staff in developing/supporting technical procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and to contribute to development of research plan.
Fluency in communication and presentation programs such as, but not limited to, Word, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint, graphing software of choice, knowledge of and adherence to data and internet security.
Experience is putting together training materials and workshops.
Strong presentation skills required.
Ability to maintain detail financial records.
