Open Rank Tenured/Tenure-Track Faculty Position
Rowan Catalysts for Sustainability
Department of Physics & Astronomy
College of Science & Mathematics
The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Rowan University is seeking to hire tenured/tenure-track faculty with an appointment to begin September 2023 as part of Rowan’s newly launched Catalysts for Sustainability program. Faculty hired as part of this university-wide cohort will collaborate across colleges, disciplines, and communities to catalyze new initiatives in sustainability research, advocacy, and education while leveraging existing strengths. This project builds upon Rowan University’s strategic pillars (access, affordability, quality, and serving as an economic engine) and furthers our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Successful candidates will have demonstrated expertise in the study of materials that help to resolve the climate crisis. Example areas include photovoltaics, catalysis, energy harvesting, and energy storage. Strengths in other areas such as education, public engagement, and public policy would be viewed favorably. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise building on or complementing existing strengths.
A Ph.D. or equivalent in Physics & Astronomy or a related field is required; postdoctoral experience is expected. Preference will be given to candidates with a track record and/or potential to establish and sustain a strong research program. We anticipate hiring at the Assistant Professor level, but outstanding candidates may be considered at the Associate or Full Professor levels. The successful candidates are expected to develop and maintain an active, highly visible, extramurally funded research program with outstanding scholarship, teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute to the various service endeavors in the Department, College, and University. Opportunities for collaboration exist within the Department, the College of Science & Mathematics, as well as with the College of Engineering, Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, a newly-approved School of Veterinary Medicine, and other colleges at the university.
The Department of Physics & Astronomy has bachelor programs in Physics and Biophysics and certificates in Photonics and Health Physics. The department also houses the newly established Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering which is a collaborative effort between the College of Science and Mathematics and the College of Engineering. The department has been recognized as a Department of Distinction by the APS and has approximately 150 undergraduates and for the past 3 year has graduated the most majors in the country for a program without a Ph.D. in Physics. In addition to computational work in planetary science and quantum optics, the department has 11 experimental labs to support the areas of biophysics, materials science and atomic and molecular physics.
