FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) at the Grove School of Engineering (GSOE), City College of the City University of New York invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. The primary field of interest is smart power/energy systems in the context of smart cities. We seek candidates whose research agenda emphasizes the cyber-physical nature of smart grids, and fuses hardware with software solutions to tackle the complex and pressing issues of sustainability, reliability, resiliency, and infrastructural interdependencies. Examples of the desired research areas include, but are not limited to applications of design and control of power electronics-based devices and systems; IoT, artificial intelligence, and big data in smart grids; and wide-scale grid integration of electric vehicles and renewable energy.
The GSOE is the only public engineering school in New York City and has been a major pipeline for power/energy engineers within the metropolitan region. The ongoing power/energy systems research efforts at GSOE span a multitude of projects that are supported by federal funding agencies (e.g., NSF), state and city agencies (e.g., New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and New York City Transit), research institutions (e.g. Electric Power Research Institute), and utility companies (e.g., ConEdison).
New York has set a list of aggressive targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase resiliency of the electric supply (e.g., 85% reduction in GHG emissions by 2050 and 9,000 MW of offshore wind by 2035). In order to achieve these goals, the power grid must evolve to feature more power electronics based devices and systems; more renewable energy and energy storage; more decentralized electricity delivery, such as microgrids; and more reliance on intelligent monitoring, control, and protection. In addition, a new generation of power engineers, trained well to cope with these changes, is needed. With this position, the GSOE plans to expand its power/energy systems engineering scope.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have a PhD in Electrical engineering or a closely related field.
Applicants must contribute to expanding the power/energy systems related research and educational activities at GSOE. This entails developing/teaching existing and new courses, attracting external funding, and publishing high-quality papers.
Applicants must be qualified and willing to teach courses related to embedded systems.
Applicants must have excellent communications and presentation skills.
VACCINE REQUIREMENT:
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
