Why Work at BNL? Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation's future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University. Organizational Overview The Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD) designs, builds, and tests superconducting magnets for use in particle accelerators world-wide. The SMD also builds magnets for various other applications (e.g., Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) and provides magnetic measurement services lab-wide. Position Description The Superconducting Magnet Division has an opening for an Assistant Scientist responsible for testing superconducting and normal resistive electromagnets. The candidate will be expected to do extensive data analysis and presentation of all test data (training will be provided if needed in testing superconducting magnets). This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Formulate test plans for various types of superconducting and normal magnets
- Supervise cryogenic testing of superconducting magnets which includes quench tests and magnetic field measurements
- Analysis and reporting of quench data and magnetic field measurements
- Interact with collaborators from other laboratories and peers to discuss results and generate reports
- Operate electronic measurement equipment, power supplies, and small specialized systems
Position Requirements Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Doctorate in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field with background in superconductivity and magnetic field measurement
- At least one year related postdoctoral experience in research, development, or associated fields
- Working knowledge of cryogenics and high current power sources used to test SC Magnets
- Data analysis and report generation skills
- Clear and concise oral and written communication skills. Experience writing reports, publications, and presenting at scientific meetings
- Ability to design a test process and do necessary software development
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Knowledge of quench simulation and magnetic field harmonic calculations
- Experience with alignment and leveling of magnets for precision field measurements
- Ability to identify error sources and do modifications to improve reliability and precision of the measurements
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements: - Ability to perform functions in a magnetic field environment
- Ability to work in varied shifts
Other Information: - Valid US drivers' license required
- Occasional travel for attending conferences and presenting research papers both nationally and internationally
- Initial 2 -year appointment
