The Energy Geosciences Division (EGD) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is seeking an outstanding research scientist to work on fundamental and applied projects in subsurface energy science, e.g., in the areas of geologic carbon sequestration, geothermal and fossil energy resource development, nuclear waste disposal, subsurface energy storage, and groundwater hydrology. The candidate must be technically broad and comfortable in a multidisciplinary working environment, with a solid scientific background and experience in basic and applied research. We seek individuals with previous experience in laboratory experimentation and in computational modeling including machine learning applications for modeling and data analysis.
The EGD Hydrogeology Department is multifaceted with expertise in theoretical porous media flow and transport and related applied mathematics, and hydrology, geochemistry, and geomechanics in both laboratory and large-scale field settings. Many staff members are involved in projects that combine hydrogeology or reservoir engineering with geomechanics and geophysics.
The incumbent in this position will conduct research and development of new approaches to laboratory, field, and/or modeling and data analysis studies of fluid flow and related geomechanical/geophysical processes in saturated and unsaturated porous and fractured media. The Hydrogeology staff conducts research to meet the needs of various projects for the Department of Energy in the areas of nuclear waste geological disposal, environmental management, fossil energy (including geologic carbon sequestration), geothermal reservoir engineering, and basic energy sciences.
The position will include working with PIs on a variety of projects including laboratory experimental projects and modeling and data analysis projects. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in and/or lead proposal-writing and seek funding when opportunities arise. In addition to the reporting requirement the job will also require technical publication and presentation at conferences and other public forums. The position is considered early-career (Research Scientist, S15.2) .
What You Will Do:
Conduct research and develop new approaches to laboratory, modeling, and machine learning studies of fluid flow and geomechanical/geophysical processes in unsaturated and saturated media, porous and fractured rock systems, and other relevant media and regions (e.g., in wells).
Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to develop advanced theories, and numerical and experimental techniques to address outstanding problems in the fields of hydrology, reservoir engineering, and geophysics/geomechanics. Emphasis will be on developments that will contribute toward addressing issues of national or international concern, such as fossil energy (including geologic carbon sequestration), geothermal reservoir engineering, nuclear waste geological disposal, environmental management, and basic energy sciences.
Assist PIs and/or serve as PI in research projects, conceptualize and conceive of research designs, perform innovative and complex research and analysis, and synthesize results.
Collaborate with staff in the Energy Geosciences Division as well as with colleagues from other institutions. Collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams, for example with geophysicists, geochemists, and biologists.
Author or co-author scientific reports and peer-reviewed journal articles. Present research results at conferences and meetings within the scientific community, and with the Department of Energy and other funding agencies.
Assist in writing proposals to fund subsurface energy research at LBNL.
Interact with clients (DOE and industry) and with professional colleagues through participation in meetings, advisory committees, and other forms of job-related communications.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Assist in preparing reports and giving briefings as needed in support of Earth & Environmental Science Area programs.
What Is Required:
Extensive knowledge of fluid flow and transport in saturated and unsaturated soils, porous and fractured media.
Expertise in carrying out laboratory experiments of fluid flow.
Knowledge of and experience with machine learning approaches with applications including but not limited to forecasting of fluid flow and transport, and analyzing large geophysical monitoring data sets.
Expertise in numerical simulation of porous media flow systems from laboratory to reservoir scale.
Experience conducting research as demonstrated by publication record.
Demonstrated technical expertise in carrying out laboratory experiments, performing data analysis, and presenting results in scientific forums, including archival refereed publications.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to write reports, conference papers, and refereed journal articles synthesizing research results, and to present research findings in conferences, workshops, and other forums.
Willingness to work with clients and professional colleagues, manage research projects, prepare funding proposals, and independently attract research funding.
PhD, or equivalent experience in hydrogeology, civil or environmental engineering, or a related field, and at least three years of relevant professional experience.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Expertise in statistical and inverse methods as applied to hydrogeology and reservoir engineering.
Deep expertise in one or more of the following topics:
Numerical modeling code applications and development
HPC for subsurface flow and transport
Laboratory imaging and experimentation related to high-pressure multiphase flow
Field hydrology observations and experimentation
