Assistant Specialist in Plant Pathogen Interaction (Part-time)
The UC Davis Department of Plant Sciences is seeking an Assistant Specialist (20% appointment) in Plant-Pathogen Interaction in the Dandekar Lab Group. The position will involve conducting laboratory and field research focused on a project called Walnut Blight Biotherapy. This project aims at developing a sustainable management strategy to control walnut blight by analyzing the genome of the bacterial pathogen Xanthomonas arboricola pv juglandis and it's plant host tissues. The Assistant Specialist will work directly under the PI and closely with undergraduates, postdocs, graduate students, and other researchers to support our research. The successful candidate will be actively involved in publishable research activities including participation in discussions on research and the interpretation of genomic and experimental research results, as well as appropriate co-authorship or acknowledgement in publications. Applicants are expected to have an interest and experience in research related to the bioinformatics of gamma proteobacterial pathogens, plant disease biology and microbiology.
I. Research in specialized areas (90%) *Bioinformatic analysis of Xanthomonas *Develop disease assays *Analysis of bacterial pathogen *Analysis of plant tissues *Assist other lab personnel in coordination of procedures, sample collection, processing and experiments on walnut blight.
II. Professional Competence and Activity (5%) *Attend seminars on topics related to fields of interest. *Participate in training programs to enhance knowledge and skills.
III. University and Public Service (5%)
May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of walnut industry give presentations to delegations of visiting scientists and industry representatives.
Participate in meetings within the department, college, campus and other University entities, as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, or closely related fields. The successful candidate must be able to conduct active bioinformatics and laboratory work. He/she/they must be extremely organized, efficient and maintain the ability to work well with others as part of a large team.
SALARY: $49,700/year (This is a 20% appointment for 1 year with the potential to extension based on performance and availability of funds.)
