Berkeley Lab's Biological Systems & Engineering Division has an opening for a Research Assistant.
What You Will Do:
Will assist with engineering Pseudomonas putida and other microorganisms for the production of biofuels and biochemicals using engineered polyketide synthases.
Will work under the direction of the PI to engineer the genome of the selected microorganism and to engineer hybrid polyketide synthases to produce existing commodity and specialty chemicals and biofuels and novel molecules as well.
Will culture the engineered microorganism and conduct productivity analyses using a variety of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques.
Will use various software to analyze the polyketide synthases of natural microorganisms and use parts of those polyketide synthases to produce new, unnatural polyketide synthases.
What is Required:
Experience with strain engineering for biofuel and biochemical production.
Experience with laboratory automation tools.
Experience with analytical equipment.
Experience with DNA analysis software.
Experience in developing and optimizing protocols for gene editing.
Capable of following instructions, troubleshooting methods, and maintaining scientific notebooks.
Ability to learn about state-of-the-art equipment and techniques.
Ability and desire to learn new techniques and technologies (e.g. fermentation, RNA-Seq, etc.)
Good written and oral communications skills.
Diligent notebook maintenance and record-keeping
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in biochemistry and/or molecular biology, or equivalent experience plus 1-2 years of lab experience.
Written and verbal communications skills.
Lab safety training.

This is a full time career appointment.
Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
