Berkeley Lab's Building Technology Urban Systems (BTUS) Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate to join the Building and Industrial Application (BIA) Department!
In this role, you will focus on the collection, management, and analysis of alternative fuel data; develop python-based web applications and user interfaces; apply machine learning algorithms to support data analysis for energy related programs; develop workflows that combine data management and analysis algorithms on LBNL servers; and potentially utilize high-performance computing hardware at NERSC.
As a part of a multifunctional team, this position will use advanced computing techniques and engineering design principles to support projects related to bioenergy technology development and energy efficiency in the US industrial sector. Additionally, this position will support collection, processing, analysis, and presentation of data related to the primary focus as well as dissemination of information about Building and Industrial Application Department activities via webinars, publications, and reports.
The Building and Industrial Application Department (BIA) conducts research on adoption of clean energy technologies, focusing specifically on large organizations, industrial facilities and processes, and energy-intensive buildings. Our research is intended to encourage more rapid adoption of technologies and techniques intended to reduce energy use in non-residential building sectors.
What You Will Do:
Support in the identification and collection of alternative fuel and energy related data. Sources may include government sources (e.g., NASA, NIST), data collected as part of US Department of Energy programs, or data collected by other universities or agencies (e.g. PubChem, published literature).
Perform quality control and assurance on collected data.
Create and maintain a central repository for collected data.
Conduct preliminary data analysis, including the use of machine learning to identify correlations.
Communicate to Lab staff data collection protocols, quality control and assurance process, and location and organization of central data repository.
Develop relevant back and front-end interfaces for web-tool development.
Prepare visualization of data and analysis results for inclusion in multiple media formats (e.g., web, print, presentations).
Assist with documenting and synthesizing results into resources for dissemination (e.g., white/conference/journal papers, technical guidance, content for software tools).
Present on new developments and improvements at workshops, conferences, and scientific journals.
Assist with data analysis and web application development for projects related to process heating, combined heat and power (CHP) systems, or district energy (DE) systems in the U.S.
What Is Required:
Bachelor's Degree in Math, Computer Science, Life Sciences, Engineering, or a related discipline and a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
A minimum of 2 years of programming experience.
Demonstrated experience in Python 3 and related libraries for web application development, management of datasets, and data post-processing/analysis.
Familiarity with either postgreSQL or MongoDB databases.
Experience executing and optimizing algorithms using statistical analysis or supervised machine learning techniques.
Demonstrated success designing, implementing, and supporting moderately complex systems and software related to energy/environmental systems.
Experience using remote servers, and willingness to learn the skills necessary for submitting batch jobs using super computing resources.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
What We Desire:
Experience in Sustainability, Energy Efficiency, Environmental / Energy Technology, or related fields.
Familiarity with chemical descriptors, their use, and application (e.g. eDragon or Mordred).
Familiarity with jet fuel certification processes and ASTM D1655, D4054, D7566.
Experience using parallel programming techniques to improve and optimize computational efficiency.
Comfort with relational database concepts and SQL.
An understanding of combustion, combustion systems, CHP, and DE Systems.

This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year, Term appointment with the possibility of extension for up to a total of 5 years or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
