Stanford Law School is seeking a two-year Climate and Energy Fellow to join with faculty and staff of its 25-year-old Environmental and Natural Resources Law & Policy (ENRLP) Program. Uniquely situated in the heart of Silicon Valley, the ENRLP Program is part of a larger scholarly ecosystem at one of the world's preeminent research universities. Program faculty and staff work across campus with scholars at the Woods Institute for the Environment and the Precourt Institute for Energy, among others.
Supported by and working in partnership with the Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance, the Climate and Energy Fellow will serve in residence at the Law School, engaging in the intellectual life of the ENRLP Program, and will be strongly encouraged to become an active participant in the University's larger environmental and energy community, where there are many untapped opportunities for collaboration and interdisciplinary work. The fellow will engage in research and analysis with a goal toward affecting policymaking and, under the supervision of Law School Professor Deborah Sivas, will work with law students interested in climate and energy policy.
We are looking for a self-starter with existing experience in the climate and energy policy area and a deep desire to think critically about difficult policy questions. Given the current state of climate policy, we expect that the individual who fills this position will work primarily on pressing issues of California climate/energy policy, but national level work around issues before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission or other federal energy agencies or international work with Steyer-Taylor scholars may also be possible. This position is intended for someone who is actively working on climate and energy issues and who wants a policy or academic career working on the legal issues arising from climate change and sustainable energy development.
In addition to developing and carrying out independent applied policy work, the fellow will work closely with faculty, staff, and students in the Environmental Law Clinic (ELC) and the Law School's unique Law and Policy Lab to develop and pursue climate and energy projects. Established in 1997, the ELC is one of eleven clinics comprising the Mills Legal Clinic and works on environmental, natural resource, and energy matters representing non-profit conservation organizations and institutions. The Law and Policy Lab is Stanford's unique policy incubator aimed at finding solutions to some of our most pressing issues. No teaching experience is required, but a willingness to work with students on projects is essential.
Applicants should have:
J.D. with at least three years of state/federal experience in the field of climate and energy law
Membership in the California bar preferred
Excellent academic credentials, writing ability, and team work skills
Demonstrated interest in working with students
The salary is based on a formula that is competitive with similar positions. We will also provide fellows with work space and a generous benefits package.
