AdventHealth Orlando seeks to hire a Safety Specialist who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.
Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,368-bed AdventHealth Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. AdventHealth Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. We are already one of the busiest hospitals in the nation, providing service excellence to more than 32,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients each year.
Monday-Friday; 8am - 4:30pm
Under the direction of the System Safety Director, the Safety Specialist oversees, coordinates, and provides active input for life safety programs at AdventHealth. This oversight includes fire safety and prevention, educational venues, ICRA (Infection Control Risk Assessment) and ILSM (Interim Life Safety Measures) management, waste stream management, hazard surveillance, and construction procedures as they relate to life safety. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
Proficient knowledge of safety, occupational health and fire protection principals, practices procedures, codes, standards and regulations.
Familiarity with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and National Integrated Accreditation for Healthcare Organization (NIAHO) standards.
Working knowledge of survey processes by organizations such as The Joint Commission (TJC) or Det Norske Veritas (DNV) as they relate to the Physical Environment including the Environment of Care (EOC), Emergency Management (EM), and Life Safety (LS).
Ability to respond to, take control of, and mitigate critical situations related to safety issues in a calm, professional, manner.
Strong analytical skills, resourceful in problem solving with the ability to observe and write accurate and error free reports
Excellent customer service abilities. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships by being courteous and positive with others. Ability to discuss, correct, and educate others on safety issues.
Able to effectively prioritize issues in variety of situations and identify risk.
Ability to perform extensive code and standard research and present summary or detailed report of findings to aid in developing compliance guidelines for AdventHealth.
Associates degree in Science, Safety, Engineering, Emergency Management, Business or related field.
5 years of experience working with agencies such as the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Joint Commission (JCAHO), etc.
Bachelor's degree in Safety or Emergency Management (Preferred)
7 years' experience in a healthcare setting (Preferred)
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:
HAZWOPER 40 Hour Course from an OSHA authorized education provider
Hospital Incident Command Center Training (HICS) from an approved education provider that follows the FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) Guidelines.
Safety related certification such as CSP, CHSP, CSM, CHCM, etc. (Preferred)
OSHA Manager certification (Preferred)
NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 Certifications (Preferred)

Actively participates in scheduled document review processes related to Policy, Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), Work Instructions, BARE Facts and Educational materials.
Contributes to the maintenance of safety reports, accident and incident investigations, and performance improvement data. Maintains working knowledge of general policies and procedures with particular attention to those associated with the Environment of Care.
Assists in the coordination of safety activities and drills as well as actively participates in hospital evacuation training and decontamination exercises and emergency management drills.
Conducts training and safety rounds, performance and coordinates hazardous surveillance rounds and safety site inspections, and other inspections and audits to assure compliance with NFPA and other Environment of Care regulatory requirements.
Follows and enforces appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling. Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies. Transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
Provides Fire Prevention education to all new employees and participates in annual education processes such as fire drills, fire extinguisher education, etc.
Coordinates all ICRA and ILSM review processes for construction and renovation within or on the grounds of AdventHealth owned properties.
Coordinates the Building Maintenance Program (BMP) for buildings assigned to the Safety Department and processes data and reports from areas outside the department responsibility.
Performs employee and work site exposure monitoring as required, collecting data and producing monthly reports and tracking system. Submits reports to obtain comprehensive documentation and recordkeeping.
