Organizational Overview
Researchers in the Biology Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory seek to unravel and fully describe the complexities of biological systems--from how plants make oils and other products to the role of proteins in disease. Our work helps to develop and makes use of the tools and techniques of biochemistry, molecular genetics, and structural biology. We also leverage the unique capabilities of Brookhaven's National Synchrotron Light Source-II and Center for Functional Nanomaterials, major research facilities open to scientists from around the world. Our research makes important contributions to fulfilling the missions of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences and Office of Biological and Environmental Research. In addition, together with the Collider-Accelerator Department, the Biology Department manages the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) at Brookhaven, which is used by radiobiologists and physicists to study the effects of space radiation on both living and non-living systems with the aim of protecting future astronauts. Position Description
Two postdoctoral positions are available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Crysten Blaby-Haas in the Biology Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory. As part of the Quantitative Plant Science Initiative (QPSI) research program, our research focuses on reducing gene function uncertainty in photosynthetic organisms. We use high-throughput (HTP) laboratory automation approaches, sequencing technologies and cutting-edge structural and imaging approaches in concert with classical physiological, biochemical and molecular methods to provide truly holistic perspectives on cellular function. By employing a wide range of approaches, the candidate will join an interdisciplinary team dedicated to accelerating genome to predictive understanding. We foster a high-energy, diverse culture with a "can-do" attitude - enthusiasm to work collaboratively and to learn new approaches is essential. Equally, we hope to expand our group's skillset by incorporating incoming skills. Position Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * The successful candidate will work on gene function testing in Arabidopsis, sorghum and green algae. * Candidates with skills that are appropriate for this project (as demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications in these areas) are encouraged to apply. Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities: * Ph.D. in Genomics, Phycology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Plant Biology, or related field (Ph.D. must have been granted in the past 5 years, and if not already graduated, then must be expected by Jan. 2020). * Demonstrated experience in plant or algal physiology, mutant construction and/or screening, and molecular biology. * Experience in manuscript writing and demonstrated track record of publication of research in high quality peer-reviewed journals. Detail oriented, excellent record keeping, organization skills and follow through. * Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based research environment. Preferred Knowledge Skills, Abilities and experience: * Experience in plant or algal genomics and transcriptomics. * Experience in synthetic biology and genome engineering. * Experience with transition metal homeostasis. * Knowledge of algal energy, carbon, lipid and nutrient metabolism. * The initial appointment will be one year, with annual renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued funding. Research under the direction Dr. Crysten Blaby-Haas. BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.
* Candidate should supply two publications that best represent their scientific accomplishments when applying.
