Berkeley Lab's Biological Systems & Engineering Division has an opening for a Senior Analytical Facility Research Associate. This Senior Research Associate position will support the implementation of analytical protocols required for metabolomics experiments. The successful candidate will carry out bench-scale analytical chemistry assays, sample preparation, and data analysis for metabolic engineering experiments, metabolomics methods development. This Senior Research Associate position is part of a multidisciplinary team of mass spectrometrists, chemical engineers, biologists, fermentation scientists and chemists as part of the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI).
What You Will Do:
Support bioanalytical research (e.g., metabolite, carbohydrate, lipid, or fuel related products, etc.) via mass spectrometry-based analytical methodologies.
Analyze data via various analysis platforms (e.g., Mass Hunter Qual and Quant, and Profinder) and provide assistance with cross-cutting technologies across JBEI related projects.
Contribute to sample preparation and analytical methods development efforts.
Maintain and troubleshoot analytical instrumentation (e.g., LC and MS).
Support metabolic engineering experiments via cell culturing and sample preparation techniques (e.g., metabolite extraction).
Assist in efforts to track sample movement in cross-divisional collaborations at JBEI.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of chemistry together with biology and biochemistry concepts is required.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with LC-MS methodologies and other analytical techniques (e.g., HPLC-UV, GC, etc.).
Demonstrated hands-on experience with mass spectrometric-based data analysis (e.g., LC-MS).
Previous hands-on experience with cell culturing and sample preparation techniques.
Good analytical, organizational and multi-tasking skills.
Ability to maintain laboratory notes, reports and operating procedures.
Good problem-solving skills and a clear understanding of methods development processes.
Able and willing to learn and implement new experimentation techniques.
Rigorous attention to detail and proper adherence to SOPs.
Good interpersonal and communication skills are required due to the highly collaborative and research support nature of the position.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related field preferred and two to five years with increasing responsibility or an M.S. degree.
Understanding of microbial metabolism and physiology is highly desirable.
Good maintenance of records and tracking of samples is ideal.
Previous experience with molecular biology techniques is highly desirable.
Previous experience with automation via liquid handling robots is highly desirable.

Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
