Lab Safety Officer, School of Engineering - (19001405)

The School of Engineering (SoE) operates multiple labs across multiple buildings, with a concentration of labs in 4 Colby that involve hazardous chemicals, gases and bio materials. This position will provide centralized and uniform safety oversight of the labs across SoE, with particular attention to Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, including chemical tracking, development and enforcement of safety policy, education and training of all SoE constituents, and conducting routine safety inspections.
This role will also be responsible for the following:
Develop and implement safety policies to ensure lab activities are conducted in a safe manner as well as in compliance with federal and state regulations.
Assist campus departments in correcting environmental, health and safety non-compliance issues (e.g., chemical storage, hazardous waste, fume hood use, natural disaster safety securing, respiratory protection, chemical inventory, hazardous work operations, chemical hygiene plans, electrical/energy safety and ergonomic workstations).
Provide general lab safety guidance and training to university staff, students and faculty.
Manage various tracking tools and systems for chemicals, personnel, and registrations to assure compliance with regulations and policies.
Investigate and complete a report for near-misses, injuries, illnesses, exposures and hazardous material incidents.
Prepare the labs for the annual inspections, assure the PIs correct all items noted in the reports and communicate this information to appropriate faculty, departmental, school and university leadership.
Coordinate testing of fume hoods, biological safety cabinets, safety showers, eye washes, and other safety devices with other Tufts' departments such as Facilities and Environmental Health and Safety.
Assist the labs with chemical and biological registrations.
Perform routine unannounced checks of the labs to look for safety violations.
Develop and maintain a School-wide Laboratory Safety Manual.
BA or BS degree in related field (chemistry, chemical engineering, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, biology
Three+ years related experience
Certified, registered, licensed or eligible in at least one area of public health, environmental protection, fire safety and/or occupational safety and health field. Such certifications include Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).
Advanced degree preferred
