About Greenfield Community College: Greenfield Community College is located in the beautiful and historic Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, between the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains and the fertile farmland of the Connecticut River watershed. Job Description: THE GCC STEM COMMITMENT: Greenfield Community College is committed to advancing the learning and educational opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Recent initiatives include new degrees and degree options in environmental and earth sciences, biology, chemistry and plant/soil science, expanded opportunities for undergraduate research and internships, and ongoing development of on-campus infrastructure for experiential learning. The college is in its sixth year of participation in the STEM Starter Academy, a state-funded initiative to increase community college enrollment, success, transfer and employment in STEM fields.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Under the supervision of the Dean of Engineering, Math, Nursing and Science, the STEM Special Program Coordinator oversees the STEM Starter Academy and all activities under the STEM Starter grant, as well as planning and implementing STEM week activities each October. The Coordinator works directly with students in advising, academic coaching and cohort building. The STEM Starter state initiative identifies four important stages for student progression: Recruiting - Readiness - Retention - Completion. Now in its sixth year, STEM Starter work will emphasize supporting students to achieve high levels of retention and degree completion and transfer, while still continuing to bring new students into the STEM pipeline. The STEM coordinator also participates in grant writing, grant implementation activities, and marketing and outreach for the science department. The coordinator is involved in ongoing conversations about how to continue improving STEM education and opportunities for GCC students.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Coordinate all the special projects related to the STEM Starter Grant activities. Collaborate with faculty, staff and students involved in those activities. Example of activities include organizing the STEM Starter Academy Summer Bridge Program and meeting all grant reporting requirements; serving as liaison to Admissions, Advising, Financial Aid, Marketing, and Web Development in order to help develop marketing materials, and support outreach and recruitment to new students.
Collaborate with four-year higher education partners (e.g. UMass, Westfield State) to expand Four-Year-Bridges program that supports community college students transferring to four-year public colleges and universities (building upon pilot of summer, 2019).
Provide intensive academic advising and coaching support to STEM students especially through regular one-on-one meetings; through coordinating educational workshops, organizing STEM orientation and cohort-building activities
Collaborate with other STEM advisors and student support services to ensure STEM students (particularly SSA participants) access supports needed to progress and complete their studies
Assist the department and college in identifying and pursuing funding sources for STEM specific projects and programs
Work actively with science department faculty and staff and the GCC grants office on grant proposals, such as assisting with idea generation, research, writing, budget development and proposal review.
Develop and facilitate annual STEM week activities at GCC in coordination with state-wide STEM week initiative (October).
Coordinate and implement details of existing E2S5 grant-based scholarship program; this is the final year of the program which will emphasize student support and completion, and data collection/final reporting.
Serve as point of contact for advising STEM students during summer or when department advisors are not available
Maintain and frequently update all GCC STEM social media accounts
Cultivate connections with other STEM organizations and community partners in the region (e.g. Pioneer Valley STEMNet)
Attend state-wide meetings and conferences as relevant to STEM Starter activities
Track and report on STEM program participant data
Participate in STEM program/department meetings
Contribute to STEM departments annual reports
Performs related duties as required
Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated experience in program coordination
Demonstrate experience with advising/career counselling or academic/life coaching
Demonstrated skills in written and oral communication, including outreach, recruiting or marketing
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team
Strong computer skills (Excel, Word/Publisher)
Demonstrated knowledge of STEM fields
Interest and experience in social media engagement (e.g. Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook)
Organized and self-directed
Demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity and access
Passionate about the community college mission
Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in STEM-relevant field
Experience with teaching and public presentations
Grant/project management experience (e.g. working with spreadsheets, budgets, grant or project reporting)
Experience working in community college or other educational setting
Additional Information: EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: Applicants who do not meet the qualifications as stated above are encouraged to put in writing precisely how their background and experience have prepared them with the equivalent combination of education, training and experience required for the responsibilities of this position.
Funding for the position is guaranteed until Sept. 20, 2019, with extension to Sept. 20, 2020 pending confirmation of grant funding. Position liaises with Chair of STEM Departments. One-year, grant-funded position. Some activities may require work on evenings and weekends, such as attending outreach events or conferences. The STEM Coordinator is expected to be on campus a minimum of 4 days per week.

GRADE AND SALARY: Grade 4. $46,974 - $56,547. Candidates are advised that salary is determined by education and experience using the classification compensation system established in the collective bargaining agreement and therefore it is very unlikely that the starting salary will be at or near the top of the range. Funding for the position is guaranteed until Sept. 20, 2019, with extension to Sept. 20, 2020 pending confirmation of grant funding.
