This position provides or facilitates the delivery of EH&S services to minimize risks and ensure compliance with environmental, occupational health and safety regulations. Responsibilities include supporting facilities managers, project managers and construction managers to identify operational and compliance risks and gaps and developing and implementing customer-focused EH&S solutions to effectively mitigate these risks. Related tasks include: participating in the facilities and construction project planning process to identify EH&S related issues and assist project teams in the development and execution of hazardous material abatement/remediation, mitigation and/or construction safety management plans; ongoing participation with project and operations teams to safely and compliantly execute projects and transition them to daily operation. Position will work closely with the Project Support Services team to ensure implementation of the University Construction EH&S Standard, Service Contractor Safety Guide and related University standards. Other duties may include supporting EH&S inspection and training programs, implementing technical assistance programs and participating in the EH&S emergency response program.
Duties and Responsibilities
Acts as a facilities/occupational/construction/renovation safety resource providing compliance support services primarily to clients in the Longwood geographical area.
Develops effective customer relationships and an in depth understanding of the EH&S needs for Longwood-based Harvard schools and units. Responsible for the ongoing success of customer relationships in the area.
Participates and represent EH&S in routine campus/school overview project meetings. Participates in regularly scheduled project specific meetings. Communicates project review and support status frequently to the Longwood Safety Program Manager, Associate Director of Project Support Services and/or Associate Director of Laboratory Safety Services, as needed.
Reviews construction project design documents and specifications. Provides comments and recommendations with respect to: compliance with Harvard's Environmental Health and Safety Guidelines for Design, identifies opportunities to incorporate minimal fabrication changes to permit safer construction methods and designs that might create problems for the safe use, operation and maintenance of the new structure.
Provides ongoing support to project and operations teams to execute construction/renovation and/or abatement /remediation activities safely and compliantly and transition these projects them to daily operation. Conducts field reviews of University construction and/or remediation projects to assess compliance with respect to University requirements and specifications. Accompanies the general contractor's Site Safety and Health Officer and/or others on periodic site inspections to observe the on-going construction activities. Provides regular reports to Project Managers regarding construction safety program implementation status and agendas. Solicits, manages and reviews safety consultant's work as necessary to ensure compliance, timeliness, and technical accuracy. Generates reports, communicates findings to Project Managers, tracks corrective action, and assembles trending reports.
Supports Longwood customers to manage EH&S related contractors, consultants and other EH&S divisions supporting project work on the Longwood campus. Manages deliverables and drives these groups project work to completion.

7. Responds to construction site safety inspections by OSHA, state agencies, and local municipalities' inspectional services departments, or other regulatory agencies.
8. Responds to and investigates accidents and near miss incidents, leads after action review with supervisors, directors and affected personnel to identify root causes. Tracks, monitors and drives adjustments in procedures, job responsibilities or trainings to prevent re-occurrence. Analyzes accident/injury trends to mitigate potential future problems – provides recommendations for corrective action.
9. Assists management with implementation of accident investigation/prevention and occupational health-related programs.
10. Assists in the development of a Serious Injuries and Fatalities Program that will be piloted on Longwood Campus.Conducts regular and as-needed assessments of environmental, safety and compliance risks identifying performance gaps and corrective actions. Conducts and/or coordinates periodic environmental health and safety inspections, provides summary reports to management. Leads the communication and/or coordination of the corrective actions necessary.
11.Develops, maintains and delivers EH&S training programs, as needed. Communicates technical hazards of project related activities that may impact Harvard personal or tenants within Harvard owned buildings.
12. Participates in EH&S Department emergency management program activities, providing training, procedures development and other services. Ensures accuracy of EH&S protocols and related information in the computer aided dispatch system.
13. Participates on a variety of EH&S project and program teams, as required.
Technology Skills Required Must be proficient in the use of technology and computers including Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Must be proficient in database management. Experience with HTML or other Web tools is preferred.
Participates in EH&S Emergency Response Program on rotating basis, as a cross-trained EH&S staff member, will be required to carry a mobile phone and respond to emergencies during non-business hours. Periodic participation on-site during off hours, holidays, and weekends may be required to support projects. Driver's license with some local travel may be periodically required. Required to wear personal protective equipment. Must be able to frequently walk up and down stairs, use ladders, work outdoors, at heights, and enter confined spaces. Must be capable of lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Must have sufficient mobility, dexterity, and endurance to perform field visits. Must be able to perform chemical monitoring and emergency response activities wearing PPE.

BS or BA in occupational safety, environmental science or related field or an equivalency of professional training, certifications and work experience.
Minimum of 5 years of safety/EHS-related experience both practical and theoretical based in industrial / institutional safety and environmental compliance.
Must possess and demonstrate a high level of expertise in OSHA/Fire Safety/EPA/MassDEP/MassDLS regulatory programs including but not limited to such standards as hazardous building materials (asbestos, lead, PCBs), Confined Space, Hazard Communication, Personal Protective Equipment, working at elevations (Fall Protection), Lockout /Tagout, NFPA 70e/electrical safety, Hazardous Waste, cranes/hoisting, areal lifts, scaffolding, and other environmental and safety programs.
Experience with both underground and above ground construction methods in order to proactively identify and address potential safety issues during construction.
Skilled in implementing and assessing occupational, fire safety, occupational health and environmental programs to University employees and related to construction project activities. A strong focus on program implementation for diverse clients. Ability to work in a fast-paced operations environment, handling multiple assignments for independent operating units.
Must possess strong communication skills (verbal and written) to effectively communicate EHS matters of compliance and risk with senior management, front line supervisors, trades personnel and others. Maintains a deep knowledge of the people, facilities, processes/systems and identifies where EHS requirements or systems can be integrated into existing operating structures or systems.
. Advanced degree (MS, MA, MBA, etc.) in occupational safety, environmental science, management or related field is preferred. . A professional certification (e.g. CSP/CHMM/CIH/PE, etc.) is preferred. . Experience working on construction projects and operations with unionized labor is preferred.
