Berkeley Lab's Biological Systems & Engineering Division has an opening for a Research Associate. This Research Associate position will assist the implementation of analytical protocols required for metabolomics experiments. The successful candidate will, therefore, assist with the employment of routine bench-scale analytical chemistry assays, sample preparation, and data analysis. The successful candidate will also support metabolic engineering experiments with the use of metabolite sample preparation, cell culturing, and molecular biology techniques. This Research Associate position at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) is part of a multidisciplinary team of analytical chemists, microbiologists, molecular biologists, chemical engineers, and chemists.
Research Associate (Level 1) Specific Responsibilities:
Supporting bioanalytical research with biological sample analysis (metabolite, carbohydrate, lipid, or fuel related products, etc.) via mass spectrometry-based analytical methodologies.
Providing preliminary data analysis via various analysis platforms (e.g., Agilent Technologies Mass Hunter Qual and Quant, Profinder, etc.) and assistance with cross-cutting technologies across JBEI related projects.
Contributing to metabolomics methods development efforts.
Assisting the maintenance and upkeep of analytical instrumentation.
Assisting metabolic engineering experiments with the use of metabolite sample preparation, cell culturing, and molecular biology techniques.
Assisting in efforts to track sample movement in cross-divisional collaborations at JBEI.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with bioanalytical data analysis (e.g., HPLC-UV/vis, LC-MS, GC,MS, etc.).
Additional Desired Qualifications for the Research Associate (Level 1 & 2):
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology or a related field preferred and up to two years of related experience.
An understanding of microbial metabolism and physiology is highly desirable.
Good maintenance of records and tracking of samples is ideal.
Previous hands-on experience with cell culturing and molecular biology techniques is highly desirable.
Previous experience with automation via liquid handling robots.
