The Groundskeeper performs grounds maintenance tasks as directed in an efficient and productive manner. The position is represented by the Teamsters Local Union No. 305.
What You'll Do
Plants, fertilizes, cultivates, and prunes trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers.
Performs turf renovation (thatching, aerating, and overseeding)
Installs, maintains, and repairs automatic and hand-movable irrigation systems and underground drainage systems.
Removes trash and litter, clears ice and snow from travel areas.
Prepares areas for athletic events, including lining, striping, and dragging.
Skillfully and safely operates all hand and power tools necessary to complete assigned tasks, including shovels, hoes, rakes, axes, chain saws, dethatchers, string trimmers, mowers, and tractors.
Keeps an accurate record of labor, material, and equipment costs for each assigned job.
Keeps informed about current trends in the industry.
Performs other duties as assigned (may be in adverse or emergency conditions. Required to respond to emergencies including adverse weather at all hours of the day and during weekend when it impacts school operations).
High school diploma or equivalent.
Three years experience in the maintenance or installation of landscaped areas or athletic fields. Up to two years of formal education or training in plant sciences, soil sciences, or ornamental horticulture may be substituted for experience.
5 years prior experience working in commercial landscape management and mtc work including plants, fertilizers, cultivates, pruning trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers.
Must possess a current Oregon driver’s license and be approved to drive under the College’s insurance policy.
Knowledge of use and care of hand tools and power equipment.
Sound basic knowledge of ornamental horticulture and skill in the performance of a wide variety of gardening tasks.
Ability to effectively assume overall responsibility for the maintenance of a landscaped area.
Skill desired in the operation of tractors larger than 30 HP.
Ability to perform the physical tasks required to carry out the job responsibilities. A pre-employment physical will be required.
Ability to read, write, and speak the English language.
Ability to work independently with little supervision.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Nice to Haves
Current Oregon Commercial Pesticide Applicator's license (or within 6 months after hire).
Irrigation classes through Rain Bird or other.
2 years experience working in irrigation and pesticide application.

Considerable amount of lifting of medium weight (15 to 35 lbs.) climbing, or other physically tiring work.
Must be able to work in a stopped, kneeling, crouched, or squatting position continuously.
Must be able to work with arms extended or in front and supporting the weight of eight pounds continuously.
Must be able to dig ditches and shovel snow continuously.
Must be able to lift and carry a fifty-pound weight repetitively over one-half hour periods.
Must be able to lift and carry a twenty-five pound weight repetitively and continuously.
Must be able to climb and work with tools from a 40-ft. ladder.
Must be able to manipulate effectively the tools and equipment used in grounds tasks.
The work continuously means that the work may be carried out over consecutive eight-hour shifts with two one-half hour breaks during each shift. Workers working under the conditions described in one and two above are expected to vary their positions frequently or to pause frequently to stretch in order to avoid fatigue and injury.
