The BACI center develops advanced high precision RF control system for proposed and on-going accelerator projects for the Department of Energy and other institutes around the world. The FPGA based RF control system developed is widely adopted on multiple accelerators, such as the US Spallation Neutron Source linac at Oak Ridge, the FERMI@Elettra free-electron laser and the high precision electron-laser timing, and synchronization for LCLS at SLAC. We are currently developing the LCLS-II LLRF under a multi-lab collaboration and collaborating to contribute to PIP-II project at Fermilab. We are also involved in collaboration with the ALS-U and the upgrade of the APEX LLRF system for the HiRES beamline at LBNL.
Work with BACI staff members to develop and apply new RF control system for accelerator and other applied physics projects.
Use currently developed packages (BIDS) as a starting point, develop a new RF control system for different projects, including hardware, firmware and software development.
Participate in the commissioning efforts and support new and existing RF control system and beam instrumentations.
Develop new algorithms to improve system performance.
Interact with LBNL and other investigators working on similar and related scientific problems.
Document and present the R&D progress and achievement in the form of journal papers, conference proceedings and scientific conferences/workshops.
What is Required:
Ph.D. degree in applied physics, electronic engineering, computer science or related fields.
Knowledge of RF system design and hands-on experience in RF testing equipment.
Knowledge of the control system theory and capable of extracting the model and running simulation to validate different control algorithms.
Experience in schematic capture, PCB layout, and PCB board bring up.
Demonstrated experience in FPGA programming, preferable using Xilinx series FPGA with the Verilog language.
Demonstrated experience in software development using Python and C/C++.
Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Experience on open source tools for PCB board design, a.k.a gEDA.
Knowledge of machine learning is a plus.
Experience with DOE-funded national lab research is a plus.

This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
