Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Manager for Environmental Services for the department of Environmental Health & Safety. This position reports to the Executive Director of the Rutgers Environmental Health & Safety Department. The Manager of Environmental Services is responsible for the entire University including experiment stations and is responsible for carrying out all University activities and maintaining comprehensive records to assure that all hazardous material waste disposal activities, pesticide management, and hazardous materials spill response and disposal in the University are or can be carried out:
(1)Without adverse health effects on the faculty, students, staff, visitors, and the surrounding public (2)In a manner that will protect the environment (3)In accordance with state and federal health-safety and environmental regulations, professional health-safety standards, and University policy and procedure.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Responsible for the operation of the programs for Hazardous, Medical, universal, and Radioactive Waste collection, treatment, management, and disposal.
Oversees pesticide management; hazardous material spill response and management of clean up.
Participates in programs for health-safety communication, hazardous material control and use, auditing of programs.
Manages development and review of RFPs, and a comprehensive University-wide training and communication effort to accomplish or aid in the accomplishment of program objectives.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in scientific training in the physical, chemical or life sciences.
Also requires a minimum of 5 (five) years of practical work experience including successfully managing staff members.
Professional certification (CSP, CIH, CHMM, CHP) or the education, training and experience sufficient to become certified in the EH&S profession.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability, experience, judgment, and maturity to carry out all departmental responsibilities without supervision or definitive guidelines and to interact effectively with regulatory authorities.
Excellent communication skills.
Broad experience and intimate familiarity with the resources that are available to help make sound technical judgments for resolution of the broad spectrum of problems associated with the job.
Contacts with a complete spectrum of experts who could provide support in an emergency.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be willing to travel, when necessary, to sites throughout New Jersey for business demands.
Master’s Degree or completion of a graduate level program in a related field.
7 (seven) years of practical work experience
Active membership and participation in a health/safety related professional society.
CDL license with hazardous material endorsement.
Experience in managing a Treatment Storage and Disposal Facility
Must be familiar with the operations, calibration, use and limitation of various sampling equipment (i.e PIDs, GMs, mercury vapor analyzers, etc)
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Must be able to wear and use a respirator (up to SCBA, work in hot, confined spaces, and be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
