The Nuclear Science Division (NSD) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) invites applications for a Divisional Fellow position from scientists with a record of substantial accomplishments and creative ability in the field of experimental nuclear physics. The Divisional Fellow position is equivalent to a tenure-track faculty position at a university, and is appropriate for highly-qualified scientists with Ph.D. degree or equivalent, who have completed post-doctoral training or equivalent experience, as well as demonstrated leadership and original achievements in research. The appointment will be as Divisional Fellow for a term of five years with the expectation of promotion to Senior Scientist following successful review.
The successful candidate is expected to play a leadership role in one of the Relativistic Nuclear Collisions (RNC) Programs at LBNL, and will be encouraged to develop new directions in research or instrumentation. The successful candidate is expected to exercise independent judgement and contribute to research in an original manner, solving complex problems using ingenuity, creativity, and advanced scientific methods. The successful candidate will interact with the scientific staff within the Division, the Laboratory and the international community and will participate in the ongoing research programs in collaboration with colleagues from LBNL as well as related universities.
The RNC group has key roles in the STAR, sPHENIX, and ALICE experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at the BNL and the Large Hadron Collider at the LHC. The RNC also has a strong instrumentation program; the RNC scientists were responsible for the development of a silicon pixel detector for the STAR (Heavy Flavor Tracker, HFT) and have major responsibilities for an upgrade to the ALICE Inner Tracker System (ITS). The group demonstrated excellence in applying the state-of-the-art silicon pixel technologies for collider experiments, and has major strengths in computing. The group intends to become a major player in the physics of EIC in the near future.
