Greenfield Community College is located in the beautiful and historic Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, between the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains and the fertile farmland of the Connecticut River watershed. GCC is a public community college serving over 4,800 people annually in credit courses and credit-free workshops. Known for the caring and supportive attitude of the faculty and staff, and for the broad support it enjoys from the surrounding community, the college is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. In addition to a strong Liberal Arts focus, the College offers a wide variety of innovative and successful programs including Gender and Women's Studies, Fine Arts, Nursing, Renewable Energy, and Outdoor Leadership, as well as varied learning environments, from traditional classrooms, to distance learning, peer tutoring, one-on-one faculty-student advising, workforce development, and learning communities that cater to specific needs and interests. Close to fifty percent of Greenfield Community College students transfer to four-year colleges, and it is Smith College's largest source of community college transfer students. Job Description: EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Provides students with an introduction to the philosophy and principles of the outdoor skill or, if course is for training instructors, introduces instructor competencies and curriculum for certification in the relevant field course. Topics covered include hazard evaluation, equipment selection, safety systems, technical knowledge and skills development, and decision-making and judgment. Instructors accompany students on extended overnight trips to out-of-state wilderness locations. Attends a limited number of faculty meetings.
Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Wilderness First Responder Certification
Collegiate teaching experience
Five or more seasons of employment as an outdoor leader in at least two of the activity areas taught in our program
Current Instructor Trainer certification in one or more of the following:
Whitewater Canoe Instructor Trainer
Flat Water Canoe Instructor Trainer
Coastal Sea Kayak Instructor Trainer
Technical Rock Climbing Instructor Trainer
Indoor Climbing Wall Instructor Trainer
Challenge Course Instructor Trainer
Wilderness Travel Instructor Trainer
Nordic Ski Instructor Trainer
Leave No Trace Trainer
Avalanche Safety Trainer
Successful community college teaching experience
Commitment to the mission of the community college
A demonstrated commitment to promoting domestic diversity and/or global multiculturalism in the curriculum where appropriate.
Master's degree or higher in a related field
