The Applied Materials and Manufacturing group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking individuals with experience in friction stir welding, cold spray, and other solid-phase processing approaches. Applicants should have a strong background in these or related thermomechanical processing methods but also be knowledgeable about physical, mechanical, and process metallurgy so that they can work with metallurgists to design intended processing conditions. The position holder will contribute to the development and application of high performance materials and innovative processing approaches, supporting business lines associated with next generation lightweight vehicles, nuclear systems, and other markets where improvements in materials performance and energy efficiency are of interest to the Department of Energy and other clients. The position holder will:
Research, plan, design, and conduct experiments involving solid phase processing and other specialty processing or testing systems.
Collaborate with others to develop individual steps and combined processes for manufacturing, joining, finishing, treating, and strengthening materials.
Relate microstructure and behavior of materials to operating conditions and external factors.
Document the results in reports and peer-reviewed publications.
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Experience in designing and executing experimental projects in friction stir welding, friction extrusion, cold spray, rolling, or in conventional forms of thermomechanical processing for metallic alloy systems.
Experience in relating microstructure and behavior of materials to operating conditions, tool design, and external factors.
