The Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator (BELLA) Center focuses on the development and application of laser-plasma accelerators (LPAs). LPAs produce ultrahigh accelerating fields (1-100 GV/m) and may provide a compact technology for a variety of applications that include accelerators for high energy physics (HEP) and drivers for high energy photon sources.
As a member of the BELLA Center of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's ATAP Division, your primary responsibility is to perform theoretical and computational research in the area of intense laser- and beam-plasma interactions and advanced accelerator concepts for BELLA Center programmatic R&D activities and projects.
What You Will Do:
Pursue forefront computational and theoretical physics studies in the areas of laser- and beam-plasma interactions, and particle acceleration.
Develop, modify, and execute simulation codes for the modeling of the laser-plasma interactions, plasma-based acceleration, and plasma dynamics. Test, analyze, improve, and optimize the numerical schemes used in the simulations.
Document and communicate results of work in peer-reviewed-journal publications and in oral presentations, including participation in meetings, conferences, and reviews.
Investigate laser-plasma and beam-plasma instabilities relevant to the HEP application of LPAs.
Research theoretical and numerical study of the basic physics of laser-plasma interactions, novel concepts for beam production and acceleration, and methods of radiation generation.
Provide theoretical and modeling support for current (e.g., production of high-quality 10 GeV-class beams from LPA) and future (e.g., multi-GeV staging) experiments performed in the BELLA Laser Facility.
Interact with professional staff within the Division, Laboratory, and externally.
What is Required:
Ph.D. in Physics or related field.
Knowledge of laser-plasma interactions, plasma-based acceleration, and/or advanced accelerator concepts.
Knowledge of advanced scientific computing techniques.
Demonstrated ability to successfully publish record/report on computational modeling and/or theoretical study of laser-plasma interactions, plasma, and/or beam physics.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently and in collaboration with professional staff both within and outside LBNL.
Excellent analytical, organizational, and multitasking skills.

This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
