Fox Islands Electric Cooperative, Inc. is an electric distribution cooperative serving approximately 1,700 customers on the beautiful islands of North Haven and Vinalhaven, 15 miles by ferry out of Rockland on the coast of Maine.
The present general manager is retiring and applications for the position are now being accepted.
The successful candidate should have good management skills, experience with Rural Utility Service construction, and overall knowledge of the operation and maintenance of an electric distribution system. Management and supervisory experience is necessary. Good oral and written communication skills a must.
The General Manager is responsible for all of the financial, operational, customer service and regulatory functions of the Fox Islands Electric Cooperative. The responsibilities also include the financial and operational management of the Cooperative’s subsidiary, the Fox Islands Wind, LLC. and the Company’s three wind turbines. Thus, knowledge of accounting practices and how they relate to this industry is essential.

The General Manager candidate should have experience that includes a career with supervisory and management experience which culminated into a chief executive officer’s position in the utility industry. This career path would provide experience and developed skillsets in the following areas.
Provide experienced and innovative leadership which motivates all members of the organization and creates an environment of creative and positive thinking, constructive productivity and cooperation.
Experience in working with democratically elected boards of directors or trustees.
Experience in working with public officials in establishing a positive and constructive relationships for meeting common goals which benefit both the communities served and the utility.
Experience in developing the utility’s reputation as customer friendly and service oriented and reliable service in the communities it serves.
Experience in managing the day to day financial and operational functions of a utility.
Familiarity with regulated companies and the ability to work with regulators in maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations.
Experience with developing annual operating and capital budgets and longer range financial and construction work plans which are utilized as road maps for future planning.
Familiarity in working with lenders including the Rural Utilities Service and the Cooperative Finance Corporation.
Familiarity with renewal energy generating projects.
