Departmental Overview Facilities Services (formerly Physical Plant--Campus Services) works to maintain a campus built environment that is conducive to teaching, learning and research. We strive to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the campus community. Facilities Services is comprised of the following units: Campus Recycling and Refuse Services, Custodial Services, Environmental Services, Grounds Operations Shops, Quality Assurance & Customer Service, Sustainability and Engineering Services, People's Park.
Performs complex technical work in one or more of the following fields: industrial hygiene, safety engineering, controlled substances, laser safety, environmental protection, hazardous materials (hazardous materials and waste management and shipping) to create and support the FS departmental safety program. Position is responsible for creating, implementing and managing safety programs related to maintenance and operations including, but not limited to, operational safety, electrical safety, confined space, fire safety, fall protection, shop safety, ergonomics, etc. Position will be responsible for creating and maintaining an effective safety program which incorporates regulatory requirements, new technologies and FS initiatives to make sure that FS staff are supported and FS leadership is fully informed about the safety needs of the department.
Develops procedures using a combination of original and standard professional approaches/techniques to solve substantive, complex problems with multiple variables. Applies advanced concepts to develop procedures to provide a safe work environment for multiple groups in complex environments. Acts as liaison and departmental expert for interactions with other campus and regulatory entities as they affect FS workplace safety. Maintains knowledge/expertise with existing and proposed changes of all regulations in all subject areas, ensures information is disseminated appropriately and incorporated in FS safety protocols, monitors compliance.
Performs or directs outreach and communication to campus and within and between FS operational groups. Often leads cooperative efforts among multiple groups and stakeholders. Supervises student assistants for the safety program.
Provides expert counsel by evaluating, interpreting and applying laws, regulations, codes and standards across complexity of environmental, health, and safety disciplines. As an experienced professional, exercises independent judgement and initiative and has a significant impact on the organization. Applies appropriate scientific and professional standards to recommend departmental policies and programs and, as needed, create new methodologies.
Ensures training requirements are known and met for all FS staff. In coordination with EH&S and FS management, develops and implements training programs, schedules and classes and ensures participation. Creates and maintains safety and training manuals and logs. Manages the safety shoe program and the procurement of safety PPE for FS personnel. Participates in the selection of safety vendors.
Drafts reports and other documentation, including use of relevant scientific data.
Inspects, investigates incidents and complaints, and recommends, and in some case implements,corrective safety measures as needed.
Advanced or expert knowledge/understanding of broad range of EH&S fields and familiarity with all EH&S fields.
Advanced or expert knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards, guidelines and, as appropriate, recommend campus policy.
Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including advanced political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment.
Advanced skill to effectively represent the campus to state and federal authorities, and community groups.
Advanced analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within budget and time constraints.
Skill in mentoring or overseeing the work of other EH&S technical and professional staff.
Skill to appropriate use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required.
Experience in development, management and implementation of safety programs for maintenance and operations groups including training, communication, regulatory interpretation and organizational process and policy.
Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications Education/Training:
Professional certification preferred.

CSP, ASP, OHST, CUSA, CIH Professional Certification
Salary & Benefits This position is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
