Berkeley Lab's Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology Division has an opening for a Computational Biology Postdoctoral Scholar. The Arkin Lab at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) seeks a Computational Biology Postdoctoral Scholar to develop new approaches to the design of microbial regulatory networks that adapt chemical production strains to sustained yield in variable environments leveraging data from the screening of genome-scale mutant libraries of multiple microbes over possibly hundreds of conditions. The incumbent will develop new analyses and develop software in the DOE Systems Biology Knowledgebase to facilitate design, diagnosis, and improvement of these regulatory networks. There are also opportunities to develop and implement experiments as well. The incumbent would be joining a collaboration among laboratories in California, Colorado and Massachusetts.
You will work with a talented team with diverse experiences and will have many opportunities to broaden their knowledge and interact with scientists on other breakthrough projects that will help shape the future. Travel to other sites for planning meetings or collaboration will occur a few times a year.
What You Will Do:
Develop and apply new tools for regulatory network design to deploy within the KBase platform, which will be shared and disseminated across the biodesign community.
Using tools inside and outside of KBase, perform computational analyses of productivity and fitness data from genome-scale mutant libraries to derive optimal regulatory networks to be constructed to achieve design goals.
Evaluate and improve designs based on experimental results. Possibly participate in the experiments themselves.
Publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at seminars and conferences.
Collaborate with other members of the project research team both internal and external to Berkeley Lab and develop new collaborations as appropriate to further the scientific goals of the program.
Aid in conceiving and writing grant proposals related to research.
What Is Required:
PhD within the last three years in computer science, data science, machine learning, chemical engineering, bioengineering, chemistry, biochemistry, chemical biology, microbiology, bioinformatics, computational biology, or related field.
Strong background in programming and machine learning.
Strong background in systems biology.
Proven ability to perform independent research and organize data for publication and presentations.
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with technical and scientific staff.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Demonstrated ingenuity in dealing with complex problems.
Demonstrated strength and efficiency in technical writing.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Strong track record in developing software tools.

This is a full time 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
