Berkeley Lab's Energy Storage & Distributed Resources Division has an opening for a Chemical Engineer Postdoctoral Scholar. The primary purpose of this position is to perform electrochemical characterization of materials being developed for the next generation of Li-ion batteries. You will learn to fabricate quality electrodes and cells in our battery fabrication lab. Electrodes of different loadings will be required. Once this ability is mastered, the incumbent will fabricate pouch and coin cells to assess the cycleability of novel cathode materials and identify sources of energy and power fade. You will have access to several instruments to perform complementary physical and chemical characterization experiments. You will be expected to prepare research reports, presentations and publications, and maintain the labs in a highly functional state.
What You Will Do:
Develop the ability to fabricate quality Li-ion electrodes that maintain contact with the current collector. Assemble the electrodes into sealed cells and cycle the electrodes to establish performance and cycling capability.
Fabricate cells with a reference electrode and perform a suite of electrochemical tests.
Analyze cycling and electrochemical data and propose primary sources for energy and power fade.
Corroborate with other groups and develop follow on tests that confirm or refute proposed hypotheses.
Process, analyze and present experimental data. This includes applying computer analysis and simulation programs to interpret experimental data and characterize battery electrode materials and interfaces.
Collaborate in the development of new research proposals and new scientific initiatives.
Participate in collaborative efforts with industrial partners as a member of a diverse research team. Prepare manuscripts, reports and presentations.
Carry out collaborative research with research associates, post-doctoral fellows, visiting scientists and students with frequent meetings and discussions.
Prepare materials for submissions and presentation to sponsors.
Present results at selected meetings.
Participate in and present results at selected meetings and seminars.
Follow all ETA and EHS safety requirements.
Pursue professional society activities.
What Is Required:
Recent Ph.D. in the chemical or material sciences and demonstrated proficiency and competency in the application of advanced electrochemical characterization techniques.
Extensive in electrode and cell fabrication.
Strong expertise and experience in experimental electrochemistry.
Knowledge of chemistry of rechargeable battery systems.
Familiarity with contemporary scientific challenges in battery science and technology.
Ability to work as an independent researcher with a high level of scientific judgment and initiative.
Excellent communication both in written and oral including excellent presentation skills.
Good organization skills.
Ability to prepare materials for presentation at meetings and workshops.

This is a full time 1 year, 6 month, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
