Berkeley Lab'sAdvanced Light Source (ALS) is seeking a Dichroism Project Scientist. The Project Scientist will provide experimental support, primarily through the maintenance, operation and further development of the X-ray spectroscopy, resonant soft X-ray scattering, and X-ray detected ferromagnetic resonance (XFMR) capabilities at ALS beamline 4.0.2. The beamlines provides soft X-rays with variable polarization in the energy range from 200eV to 2000eV and hosts scientists who use polarization dependent soft X-ray spectroscopy, scattering and XFMR to characterize magnetic materials and other ordered systems such as ferroelectrics and multiferroics. The Project SCientist is expected to maintain and expand the experimental capabilities at the beamlines through instrument upgrades and method development as well as to collaborate with and support the ALS user community active in this field of research. Moreover, the project scientist will participate in the research program at beamline 4.0.2. The person in this role will also work on a wide range of collaborative research projects and pursue an innovative individual research program. This multidisciplinary position requires highly developed analytical and quantitative skills, initiative, independence, and team leading skills to critically impact the achievement of ALS organizational goals.
The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co-location of these user facilities – including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the NERSC scientific computing center, as well as Berkeley Lab's outstanding programs in materials and chemical sciences among others – offers a prime environment for collaborative science. What You Will Do:
Collaborate with the user community in performing state of the art soft x ray spectroscopy and resonant scattering experiments at ALS.
Work closely with other beamline scientists to establish the day-to-day operation of ALS beamline 4.0.2.
Maintain and further develop X-ray absorption spectroscopy, resonant soft X-ray scattering, and X-ray ferromagnetic resonance (XFMR) capabilities at ALS beamline 4.0.2.
Attract and develop an active user community using soft X-ray techniques for research centered at ALS BL4.0.2.
Creatively contribute the development of novel and unique beamline and end station instrumentation.
Maintain a personal research program in soft X-ray scattering, X-ray spectroscopy and/or X-ray detected ferromagnetic resonance.
Disseminate research results through publications in peer reviewed journals and presentations at national and international conferences.
Familiarize users with the beamline and end station operation, coordinate and schedule experiments, ensure users are acquainted with and abide by all ES&H regulations.
Guide ALS technical staff assigned to beamline projects.
Maintain current knowledge of and implement relevant Division and Program Conduct of Operations and Quality assurance policies and procedures.
Conduct research relevant to the mission of the Division and Laboratory.
What is Required:
Ph.D. or equivalent experience in the physical sciences or engineering as demonstrated by broad knowledge of and experience in synchrotron radiation science and instrumentation.
An excellent practical knowledge of physics or material sciences and their applications in scientific research.
Experience and the desire to work in a multidisciplinary scientific research environment interacting with a variety of researchers at all levels.
Extensive experience of using soft X-ray dichroism in spectroscopy and scattering for the study of ordered materials with synchrotron radiation, including the knowledge of the operation and characteristics of soft x ray beamlines.
Demonstrated expertise in maintenance and operation of resistive and superconducting magnets.
Good understating of X-ray dynamics experiments such as XFMR.
Excellent scientific publishing record.
Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities, provide quality work within tight time constraints and deliver projects on schedule.
Experience collaborating in a diverse multidisciplinary team environment with excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to interact with a variety of technical and scientific personnel with varied academic backgrounds.
Strong and effective oral and written communication skills are required for documentation of beamline operations and for summarizing, presenting, and publishing the results of R&D projects.
Enjoys teaching other scientists and students how to effectively and safely operate complex scientific instruments.
