Berkeley Lab's Computational Research Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar. The Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering (CCSE) develops and applies advanced computational methodologies to solve large-scale scientific and engineering problems arising in DOE mission areas involving energy, environment, and industrial technology. One primary focus of CCSE researchers is on designing algorithms for multiscale, multiphysics problems described by nonlinear systems of partial differential equations, and in developing implementations of algorithms that target current and next-generation massively parallel computational architectures. CCSE researchers work collaboratively with application scientists to develop state-of-the-art solution methodologies in these fields.
This position is focused on scientific software development for block-structured adaptive mesh refinement core infrastructure and applications. CCSE is the home of AMReX, a massively parallel software framework that supports a variety of science applications. AMReX makes efficient use of distributed multi- and many-core high performance computing hardware and is actively being extended to work effectively on hybrid CPU and GPU systems.. The person in this position will join an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers in extending the current functionality and performance portability of AMReX and will work with AMReX-based application teams to improve the performance of those applications on current and future architectures.
What You Will Do:
Participate in the extension of AMReX core functionality to work effectively on hybrid CPU/GPU systems in the context of hierarchical parallelism on large-scale computing hardware, and assist developers with the adoption of this functionality into complex AMReX application codes.
Participate in extending AMReX's ability to interact with external software packages, such as those for I/O, code coupling, visualization and analysis, and performance measurement.
Use performance profiling tools on AMReX-based codes to identify impediments to effectively exploiting algorithmic parallelism, and propose and assess improved implementation strategies as appropriate.
Develop and assess optimization strategies that mitigate computational and communication bottlenecks in AMReX and AMReX-based application codes.
Work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment including mathematicians, computer/computational scientists, and domain scientists.
What is Required:
Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or the Physical Sciences/Engineering within the last 3 years, with a strong research background in applied mathematics, computational methods, and scientific computing.
Background in scientific computing with grid-based and/or particle methods.
Experience with MPI and/or OpenMP.
Experience with CUDA and/or other techniques for general purpose programming on GPUs.
Strong C++ programming experience.
Keen interest in extending mathematical and scientific computing techniques to new architectures.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work productively independently and collaboratively as part of a diverse team.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Understanding of advanced computer and systems architecture and their contributions to the overall system performance.
Experience using performance analysis tools.
Experience with modern Fortran and/or python.
Experience with version control systems such as git.

This is a full time, 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
