Berkeley Lab's Molecular Biophysics & Integrated Bioimaging Division has an opening for a Research Assistant. Under the direction of the Biomedical Isotope Facility (BIF) Supervisor this individual will produce and provide quality assurance for PET radiopharmaceuticals. This includes maintenance and operation of BIF instruments and equipment, record keeping for radiopharmaceutical productions, and general lab duties such as inventory, ordering, and stocking supplies.
What You Will Do:
Perform routine production of PET radiopharmaceuticals for research studies. This will involve operating automated radiochemistry equipment and Quality Control equipment. Ensure all necessary reagents are prepared and available for the synthesis and QC reagents prepared to perform QC on all radiopharmaceuticals used for research studies.
Complete and file batch records for each radiopharmaceutical production. Maintain an inventory of precursors, reagents and supplies for radiochemical production. Perform radiation surveys of the radiochemistry laboratory and cyclotron vault.
Perform periodic laboratory housekeeping duties to comply with EH&S guidelines for radiation and chemical safety, and to maintain a clean and orderly and safe radiochemistry laboratory. Properly label, separate and dispose of biohazardous, radioactive, and chemical hazardous waste according to EH&S. Maintain laboratory instrumentation and automation equipment.
Participate in developing new radiopharmaceutical agents for routine use. Train for operation of BIF cyclotron.
What is Required:
BS or higher degree in chemical sciences or equivalent experience required.
Experience with analytical instrumentation including HPLC, TLC and/or GC.
Computer knowledge to operate equipment and to use word processing, database, and email applications.
Basic knowledge and understanding of radioactivity, use of radiation in experimentation.
Must be detail-oriented, able to organize, record and maintain accurate records.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Organic or medicinal chemical synthesis experience.
Interest or experience in radioisotope production preferred.
Experience in handling, storage and disposal of radioactive materials is preferred.
