Berkeley Lab's Energy Storage & Distributed Resources Division has an opening for a Thermal Science Materials Research Scientist. You will join a vibrant team of scientists and engineers, participate in the mentorship of graduate students and postdocs, work collaboratively with other groups to build multidisciplinary research projects, and contribute to other projects at the Lab related to energy conversion, transport, and storage.
In this role, you will be responsible for developing and growing an impactful research program in understanding and improving thermal transport at interfaces in composite materials and thin films. Composite materials have widespread energy applications ranging from thermal insulation for buildings to electrochemical batteries. Thermal transport in composite materials are decided primarily by interfaces. The research will require manipulation of these interfaces using various chemistries and characterizations using various metrologies. Part of the research program will also include developing an understanding of thermal radiative properties of epitaxially grown thin films.
What You Will Do:
Manipulate interfaces using chemical and physical routes to change thermal and mechanical properties at these interfaces. Characterization of these interfaces using required spectroscopies and metrologies and establishing the structure/property correlation
Perform in-operando measurement of the thermal transport properties of an operational battery with micron-scale spatial resolution with the goal to isolate thermal properties of interfaces from the bulk electrodes. The measurement should be immune to noise and thermal signals generated by the operation of the battery itself, and should not be invasive in such a way that might change the properties being measured.
Manipulate interfaces in composites to control thermal transport for applications such as building thermal insulation.
Conduct studies on thermal radiative transport at interfaces of epitaxial thin films for both high temperature and low temperature applications.
Identify and develop new research areas and programs. In support of this, identify funding sources and submit grant proposals. Particular emphasis on novel characterization techniques to map heat generation and transport in functioning battery cells with nano-to-macro scale spatial resolution.
Work collaboratively with other groups and resources to achieve these goals.
Prepare scientific data for publication in refereed journals and present findings at seminars and conferences.
Supervise, mentor, and coach graduate students, postdocs, and scientific and technical staff as appropriate. Maintain a safe working environment and demonstrate respect for environmental protection, health and safety, and help instill those aspects in all employees in the division.
Help support related projects in optimization of the radiative photon coupling of heat for solar-thermal water desalination.
What is Required:
Ph.D., or equivalent work experience, in Materials Science or Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent discipline.
Experience working with optics and Class IV laser systems.
Experience working in surface modifications using either gas or liquid phase chemistry.
Substantial knowledge and experience in in-operando battery thermal measurements.
Substantial knowledge and experience in macro and nano scale thermal property metrologies including 3-omega electrothermal techniques and time domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) ultrafast optical pump-probe techniques.
Substantial knowledge and experience in nanomaterial synthesis using CVD, PECVD and characterization using SEM, TEM, AFM, FTIR and XPS.
Knowledge and experience in thin film deposition using thermal/eBeam evaporator and ALD.
Demonstrated ability to conceive of and build novel scientific experiments to empirically test hypotheses.
Knowledge of electrochemical battery systems, with particular emphasis on their thermodynamics and heat generation and transport properties.
Ability to identify new research areas and write proposals.
Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of scientists.
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated ability to independently carry out creative research with a proven record of publications and achievement.
Outstanding leadership skills with track record of mentorship.
