Berkeley Lab's Joint Genome Institute Division has an opening for a Senior Research Associate. Under the general supervision, the individual will be responsible for conducting complex experimental procedures to design, build, and sequence verify synthetic DNA constructs or combinatorial libraries. Will analyze, report data, and propose experiments to troubleshoot challenging DNA synthesis and cloning problems. Will participate in a team effort to implement and improve high throughput robotic pipelines for Gibson chewback cloning, yeast based assembly, and Golden Gate assembly and cloning. Will also provide technical support to implement genome engineering tools for bacteria and fungi within the Synthetic Biology Program. The routine laboratory procedures will include, but not limited to gene synthesis, vector engineering, bacterial and fungal cell transformation, and genomic DNA screening. The responsibilities also include collaborating with personnel in the Informatics, Instrumentation, and Metabolomics Groups to validate and implement newly developed technologies. Position will report to the Synthetic Biology Platform Group Lead.
Senior Research Associate (Level 2) Specific Responsibilities:
Research and Development
Apply advanced molecular biology principles to design and build synthetic DNA constructs and combinatorial libraries for general users projects.
Perform complex experimental procedures to support the expansion of genome engineering tools in different bacterial phyla.
Participate in the implementation of high throughput processes to build DNA constructs and bacteria conjugation.
Analyze experimental results, generate reports, and present technical findings and project stats at regular group meetings.
Collaborate with informatics staffs in data analysis, or developing new analysis tools.
Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook; observe and document any deviations from established protocols.
Attend and present findings in external meetings and conferences.
Implementation of New Processes
Write and update SOPs to describe the experimental procedures and areas of improvement.
Assist in troubleshooting of newly developed processes.
Provide technical guidance and training of laboratory procedures to other technical employees.
In addition to the above, Principal Research Associate (Level 3) Specific Responsibilities:
Independently design DNA constructs and complex experimental procedures for the genome engineering projects.
Search public databases and gather resources needed to perform the assigned projects.
Lead data interpretation and design experiments to troubleshoot.
Assemble and publish experimental results in peer-reviewed journals.
Additional Responsibilities as needed for the Senior Research Associate & Principal Research Associate (Level 2 & 3):
Perform quality control and maintenance of laboratory equipment and robotics.
Assist with experimental design and data analysis for other collaborators' scientific research projects.
Senior Research Associate (Level 2) Required Qualifications:
BA/BS in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or related field and two to five years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferably three to five years' experience in molecular biology experimental design and methodologies for DNA synthesis, vector cloning, sequence analysis, and metabolomics.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or related field or equivalent experience preferred.
Extensive experience of advanced DNA cloning technologies and genomic research.
Good understanding of how scientific principles apply to problem being studied.
Demonstrated ability to interact well with members of a multi-disciplinary research team and have strong written and oral communication skills.
Experience in complex protocol development and optimization procedures.
Good analytical, record-keeping and communication skills necessary for working in a laboratory environment.
Proficient computer skills, including knowledge of related software programs.
Effective interpersonal skills necessary for working in a diverse team environment.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as an active team member in a group effort.
In addition to the above, Principal Research Associate (Level 3) Required Qualifications:
Master's or PhD degree preferred and three to six years of experience in independent design, processing and analysis of data.
Demonstrated ability to lead projects from start to completion.
Experience in presenting research findings in national conferences.
Experience in writing scientific papers published in peer-review journals.
Additional Desired Qualifications for the Senior Research Associate & Principal Research Associate (Level 2 & 3):
Experience with automated liquid handling systems.
Experience in working with large DNA molecules.
Knowledge of state-of-the art laboratory instruments.
