Berkeley Lab's Computational Research Division has an opening for a FFTX Postdoctoral Scholar. The Applied Numerical Algorithms Group (ANAG) develops advanced numerical algorithms and software for partial differential equations integrated with the application of the software to problems of independent scientific and engineering interest. The primary focus of our work is in the development of high-resolution and adaptive finite difference methods for partial differential equations in complex geometries with applications to DOE-mission applications including porous media flows, magnetohydrodynamics, industrial problems, climate, and fusion energy.
ANAG, in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University, is the home of FFTX, an open-source package under development for computing problems using FFTs on modern HPC systems. FFTX is a part of the Department of Energy's Exascale Computing Project. You will join an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers in extending the current functionality embodied in FFTX and science applications using FFTX to work effectively on hybrid CPU and GPU systems.
What You Will Do:
Work with C/C++ developing the User API.
Work with the Spiral. SPIRAL is a program and library generation/synthesis and autotuning system that translates rule-encoded high-level specifications of mathematical algorithms into highly optimized/library-grade implementations for a large set of computational kernels and platforms.
Assist with publications of work and participate in conferences and meetings.
Contribute to a multidisciplinary team environment which includes mathematicians, computer/computational scientists, and domain scientists.
What is Required:
Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or the Physical Sciences/Engineering within the last 3 years, with a strong research background in applied mathematics, computational methods, and scientific computing.
Above-average skill in C/C++ programming.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Familiarity with FFTW and the Spiral package.
Experience with vectorization (one of: compiler auto-vectorization, intrinsics or GPU SIMT) and threaded programming methods.
Understanding of advanced computer and systems architecture and their contributions to the overall system performance.
Experience implementing a high-performance FFT code, or used an FFT package to develop an FFT-based algorithm.
Experience using performance analysis tools.

This is a full time, 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
