We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the area of Computational Mathematics with an emphasis on application to Chemistry. This role will be part of the Scalable Solvers Group in the Computational Research Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).
What you will do:
The successful candidates will participate in researchactivities related to computational mathematics for chemistry that are relevantto DOE and LBNL missions. Of particular interest are the development ofnumerical algorithms for using low-rank approximation to accelerate hybridfunctional based Kohn-Sham density functional theory based electronic structurecalculation, the development of efficient algorithm for linear response andcore excitation calculations that take into account relativistic effects, andthe development of high performance software tools to accelerate the solutionof the quantum many-body problem.
Research activities will include:
Analysisof the performance profile and algorithmic complexity of existing computationalapproaches.
Improvingof the efficiency and reliability of existing algorithms.
Development of novel computationalalgorithms on high performance computers for quantum chemistry.
PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Science or Engineering within the last 3 years, with a strong background in computational chemistry, computational physics or materials science.
Knowledge of local basis set method and/or planewave methods for Hartree-Fock and density functional theory.
Knowledge of linear algebra and multilinear (tensor) algebra, including sparse matrix computation.
Program proficiently in a high-level programming language, such as C++/C/FORTRAN, and should have experience in parallel computing and be ability to use MPI and OpenMP.
Excellent communication skills are essential.
Additional desired qualifications:
Knowledge of performance optimization for scientific codes.
This is a full time postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Work Schedule: M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
