Berkeley Lab's Information Technology (IT) Division has an opening for a Network Engineer to join the Lab's Network Services Team! In this role, you will work in a team to design, build, operate and maintain networks to support general and specialized needs of LBL scientific and operations divisions. These networks are essential facilities for the business of the laboratory and requires both reactive (servicing user support requests, responding to failures, etc) and proactive (projects to maintain, modernize and upgrade the network) work.
This position will be filled at a level 1, 2, or 3, dependent on experience. This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
What You Will Do:
Assist in designing, installing, and analyzing LBL's wired and wireless networks.
Work with more senior engineers on small projects or parts of larger projects.
Provide a first level of response to support calls and service request incidents, escalating those that require more senior engineering attention.
What Is Required:
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of one year of IP networking experience in a LAN environment.
Introductory-level experience with the installation, operation, and testing of network infrastructure components, including switches and firewalls.
Experience or training with switch configuration, preferably Arista, Cisco, and/or Juniper switches.
Experience with the installation, operation, and testing of network infrastructure components, including switches and firewalls.
What We Desire:
Advanced knowledge of network technologies, protocols, and standards such as Ethernet, VLANs, IPv4, ARP, TCP, UDP, Spanning Tree, LACP, and LLDP.
Demonstrated ability to conduct network diagnostic tests and analyze the results using test equipment and computer systems at an advanced level.
Using creativity and initiative, ability to design, develop and implement complex solutions consistent with user requirements and established in consultation with designated technical expert(s) and/or supervisor.
Previous experience leading a project, taking a lead role in designing, implementing and/or administering systems, or providing direction to projects in the context of technical designs.
Ability to exercise judgment consistent with established technical standards in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
Working knowledge of SNMP and MIB structure.
Familiarity with designing and implementing network security systems including firewalls and VPNs.
Basic configuration and administration experience with Windows and Macintosh operating systems and Linux/UNIX variants, especially FreeBSD.
Certification(s) in Arista, Aruba, Cisco, and/or Juniper.
Experience with the following:
TIA/EIA-568B/C cabling standards.
Installation, operation, and testing of routers, wireless access points, and network monitoring systems.
IPv6 in a production environment.
UNIX command line environment.
IP network services such as MPLS, IP multicast and QoS.
Routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP, or ISIS.
Using and troubleshooting DNSSEC.
Configuring and managing wireless network controllers.
Configuring, managing, and using network management software packages (open source and/or commercial).
Programming in Perl, Python, C, C++, and/or shell scripts.

This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid),1 year, Term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

Salary is commensurate with experience.
