Berkeley Lab'sAccelerator Technology and Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an opening for a Physicist Postdoctoral Scholar. We are looking for a talented and motivated postdoctoral fellow to join our team working on exciting research projects in the Electron Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) group in the ATAP Division
What You Will Do:
Perform electron EDM and related experiments using ultra-cold cesium and francium fountains, working closely with LBNL scientists, other Postdocs and students, and collaborators from other institutions.
Collaborate on developing all aspects of the apparatus, including magneto-optical traps, Zeeman slower (for francium), ultra-cold atom fountains, magnetic shielding, strong electric fields, fountain beam transport, laser systems and laser optics.
Assist with set up and operation of a francium fountain
Communicate results through internal reports, internal and external presentations, including at meetings, and through peer-reviewed publications.
Proactively promote and participate in matters relating to safety and environmentally sensitive work practices.
Adhere to ES&H policies and attend required training as required.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in unison with senior project team members.
What is Required:
Recent Ph.D. degree in physics or related field.
Experience in laser trapping and cooling of alkali atoms, including cooling below the Doppler limit to produce ultra-cold atoms.
Experience in the design and construction of magneto-optical traps, Zeeman slower, cold-atom imaging systems, and associated laser systems, laser optics, and electronics.
Interest in EDM experiments and experience in performing measurements with ultra-cold atoms.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to work effectively in a team that includes, engineers, computer scientists, scientific staff, technicians, and students.
Ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing).
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Ability to travel to TRIUMF (Vancouver, Canada) starting in 2020, several times/year for several weeks, to help set up and operate a francium fountain.

This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
