The Electrical Shop is responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical apparatus on the Berkeley campus.
Under the direct supervision of the Manager of the Electrical Shop/ Support Shop, this position supports the electrical unit by assisting with installation and repair of all lighting systems.
• Coordinates the assignments of Sr. Building Maintenance Workers (Sr. BMWs) on a daily/weekly and emergency basis. Has oversight for work assignments and follow up on internal requisitions and materials ordering for the support shop. Determines backlog assignments and solutions to expedite them. • In conjunction with the Building Trades Manager, establishes and adheres to a systematic schedule for performance of assigned tasks throughout the campus. The lead will support each group member in discussions on individual safety, the professionalism of the work being performed, training needs, equipment needs, techniques and methods to accomplish specific tasks, and “coaching” on best/preferred practices. • The lead will provide, on an ad hoc basis trade expertise and counsel to shop workers. • Provides direction to Sr. BMW staff in emergency situations. Hire and guide contractors to perform work not completed. • Upon request, provides assistance for special purchasing problems. May also order lead-maintained special parts, supplies and/or equipment, including centrally stored materials. • As required by the specific overtime assignment, assists the Zone Supervisor to identify workers who possess the skills necessary to complete the job. Monitors that the scheduled overtime requests are managed closely to remain within budget. • Conducts a regular monthly meeting for specific-craft employees to discuss safety and trade/craft issues. • Identifies and recommends safety and professional training programs for the Sr. BMWs. • Manages time cards and reporting of actual hours spent on each job. Responsible for checking all daily time cards of Sr. BMWs and referring them to the shop superintendent. • Monitors time-to-job data via the current system and reviews results with all appropriate parties each month. SUPPORT TO SUPPORT SHOP
• Perform inspection, maintenance, testing, alteration, installation, trouble-shooting and repair of all lighting systems and all related emergency electronic/electrical components and systems. Troubleshoot and repair lighting failures from the wall switch to the installation of all types of diffusers. Maintain all systems including H.I.D., incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Test emergency lighting systems and make repairs as necessary
• Adhere to all university and departmental safety guidelines. Attend job-related and safety training as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.• Knowledge and experience repairing and updating/retrofitting all types of ballasts, switches, sockets, fuses, lamps, photocells, motion sensors and diffusers. • Knowledge of electrical circuitry, inverter systems, wall packs and battery maintenance. • Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to interact in a positive manner with campus community, including students, building managers, academic personnel, and craft personnel, in a multi-cultural environment. • Ability to read blueprints and wiring diagrams to find electrical panels, lighting breakers and to install, emergency back-up batteries and dimming ballasts in all types of fixtures. • Knowledge and understanding of safe work practices. • Sufficient writing and computer skills to complete forms, job status reports, logs, etc. • Intimate knowledge of the dangers associated with electrical systems up to 480V and the ability and willingness to utilize lockout/tag out procedures to ensure a safe working environment. • Ability to work safely off ladders, lifts, scaffolding and other devices intended for working in high spaces. • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. • Ability to work indoors/outdoors in fluctuating and/or extreme weather conditions. • Must be available to respond to emergencies, work on-call, rotating swing shift and holidays. • Adhere to Physical Plant—Campus Services’ work rules and Code of Conduct. • Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions.
