POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE)/MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) (part-time, 50%), to develop an advanced high-volume ratio scroll expander suitable for an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power block operating from a solar collector temperature source at 150°–250°C. The major design goal is to achieve an isentropic e?ciency surpassing previously tested two-stage scroll expansion (70% isentropic) while simplifying the ORC and improving the delivery and control of power to the DC bus, using solar-thermal energy at >150°C. Responsibilities include leveraging MIT resources to conduct original research and development meeting project objectives and advancing the state-of-the-art in academic literature and industry best practices; maintaining and improving design documents and engineering codes (geometric and thermodynamic) for design, simulation, and optimization of scroll expander hardware; supervising the speci?cation, procurement, assembly, testing, and validation of engineering outputs at MIT and external ORC test facilities; utilizing internal project management processes and procurement platforms to allocate funds according to the spending plan and sponsor-approved budget; identifying and managing vendors, contractors, students, and others to streamline progress towards project deliverables and milestones; coordinating with MIT co-PIs and SERIIUS (Solar Energy Research Center for India and the U.S.) consortium leaders at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory for timely delivery of quarterly reports, presentations, project information/updates, timelines, budgets, spend plans, etc.; coordinating with research collaborators at University of South Florida and Indian Institute of Science and STG International; organizing telecons, joint research actives, publications, and meetings; coordinating partner site visits to MIT; and maintaining laboratory equipment and project assets.
