Budget Title: Instructional Support Specialist (SL-4)
This position is part of a SUNY-wide team initiative to increase student enrollment and focuses on Smart Energy; part of this effort is on advanced lithium batteries. The NorthEast Center for Chemical Energy Storage (NECCES) at Binghamton, an Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC), has a new fully functioning Battery Dry Room with an electrode coating and cell-fabrication line. This activity will be available for supporting research activities on campus and for supporting local industry. In addition, this position will play a key role in training the next generation of students and for continuing education of the present workforce. This position, available immediately, will report to SUNY Distinguished Professor M. Stanley Whittingham. This position will closely interact with NECCES and the SUNY2020 Smart Energy Team.
The position will be responsible for:
Operation and Use of The Dry Room:
This position will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the dry-room and its equipment.
This position will be responsible for training all users on the proper use of the Dry Room equipment and ensuring that all users have taken proper safety training before entering the dry room.
This position will be responsible for assisting users in battery cell making and testing on energy storage technologies for BU faculty and students, as well as outside users.
Research on Lithium Batteries:
This position will be responsible for pushing the frontiers of battery science and technology forward. Research will include collaboration with BU and other faculty, as well as with other companies.
There will also be opportunities for independent research, and for enlarging the research effort through external funding. Such research could lead to the title of Research Assistant or Associate Professor.
This position will be responsible for presenting and reporting research results, preparing invention disclosures, and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
This position will also be responsible for generating business from outside units, and for working with industry, national labs and battery consortia.
This position will assist the Instructional Post-Doctoral Associate from the Center for Learning & Teaching on the creation of course and training modules for undergraduate, MS and PhD students SUNY-wide.
This position will also take a lead in continuing education for workforce members in the battery area.
Ph.D. in electrochemistry, chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering or related field required with significant expertise in the electrochemistry of lithium ion batteries.
Minimum of 2 years postdoctoral or industry experience in Li batteries beyond the PhD required.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and the personal skills to work as part of a team and to interact effectively with external units.
Prior work in dry room settings preferred, with electrode formulation and battery fabrication skills.
