We are seeking a talented Research Assistant to support a group that uses machinelearning technologies including convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recurrentneural networks (RNNs) and natural language processing (NLP) to extractfeatures from Electronic Health Records (EHR) perform longitudinal studies ofthe data and improve models for suicide prevention. Specifically, the projectaims to predict the probability that a patient who has been hospitalized for asuicide attempt will need to be readmitted within 30-60 days after beingdischarged. The position will conduct research to determine the most effective datarepresentation as well as the most efficient DL technology to use for the largeand complex Million Veteran Program dataset.
This is a 6 month term appointment and the successful Research Associatewill have experience with machine learning techniques such as CNN, RNN, and NLP, be team-oriented, pay strict attention todetail, and have good communication skills. Will provide research supportincluding the review and analysis of research data, as well as prepare andmaintain documentation and interact with a multi-lab multidisciplinary team ofcomputer scientists and physicians that are part of the MillionVeterans Project (MVP) program.
What you will do:
Support the development of efficient MachineLearning methods for improving the current prediction and improving suicideprevention.
Work closely with computationalscientist and physicians to provide research support including the review andanalysis of research data.
Takerequired courses and read necessary materials to access and handle the data.
Access and download publiclyavailable research data sets from a database hosted by NERSC.
Run modeling and simulationsoftware, categorize and analyze the data.
Store data on a shared server thatcan be accessed by the research team for future review andexperimentation.
Prepare and maintain documentation (codedescription and tutorials, technical reports, summaries, data analyses).
Participate in research group meetings.
What is required:
Bachelor's degree and at least 6 monthsof related experience.
Rudimentary knowledge and skills withdeep learning technologies and machinelearning techniques such as CNN,RNN, and NLP.
Demonstrated analytical, organizationaland multi-tasking skills with the ability to follow written instructions andprotocols.
Proficiency in creating and maintainingdocumentation and analyzing research data.
Excellent interpersonal andcommunications skills are essential.
