Berkeley Lab's Material Sciences Division has an opening for a Theory Materials Staff Scientist. The Staff Scientist will lead the development of a theoretical and computational materials program for accelerating the targeted and exploratory synthesis of functional solid-state materials; by developing mechanistic and predictive understanding of materials formation pathways under a variety of solid-state synthesis techniques and conditions. The Staff Scientist will be expected to develop, lead, and ultimately fund an independent research program to develop theory for materials synthesis.
Lead the development of hypotheses to rationalize how variations in synthesis parameters affect crystal structure, materials stability, particle morphology, crystalline disorder and defects during materials formation.
Creatively contributes to the computation of energy landscapes relevant to inorganic materials synthesis reactions, in both solid-state and aqueous environments.
Manages and evaluates materials thermodynamics and kinetics in crystallization processes, including crystalline stability and metastability, transformation barriers, and nucleation kinetics.
Works closely with experimentalists to design in situ and ex situ experiments to validate and improve synthesis theory frameworks.
Conducts research to identify and synthesize novel materials with useful properties for energy applications, such as battery cathodes, solar photovoltaics, semiconductors, and other functional materials.
Develops and maintains coding infrastructure for the analysis of synthesis reactions.
Actively seeks solicitations for relevant government and industrial funding.
Prepares funding proposals.
Writes and edits technical papers.
Directs the work of technical support staff and/or students.
Interacts with work group and professional colleagues external to LBNL.
Disseminates research results via publications in peer reviewed journals; present results via oral presentations at various meetings and conferences as well as peer reviews of projects.
What is Required:
Ph.D. and/or equivalent experience in Material Science, Engineering or a related field and a minimum 5 years or more of work experience or equivalent combination of research and education.
Extensive experience in the methods of computational materials discovery and design; high-throughput computational materials screening, crystal structure prediction, materials property DFT calculations, and large-scale data analysis using Python.
Demonstrated experience with a broad range of materials synthesis techniques, such as solid-state ceramic synthesis, hydrothermal synthesis, and reactive sputtering.
Demonstrated mastery of materials thermodynamics and kinetics, and experience with theories for nucleation, crystal growth, solid-aqueous equilibria and electrochemistry.
Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and organize data for publication and presentations.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills specific to scientific research and concepts.
Outstanding record of scientific publications.
Proven ability to work collaboratively with staff members at all levels.
Ability to interact effectively with all members in the Lab.
Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Recognized as a resource or active impact contributor in battery field as perceived through publications in refereed journals, highly cited papers, invited talks, conference presentations, and awards.

This is a full time 1-year term career-track appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
