Berkeley Lab'sEarth and Environmental Sciences Area has an opening for a Electrical Engineering Postdoctoral Scholar focused on advancing a novel electromagnetic system for sensing shallow subsurface electrical conductivity and for deployment on unmanned aerial vehicles. This position requires knowledge in the fields of signal processing, electromagnetic methods and/or electrical engineering. You will work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists to develop a new technology and to improve predictive understanding of multi-scale terrestrial system dynamics.
What You Will Do:
Conduct research and develop a novel electromagnetic system that will be used to sense soil electrical conductivity in the top 10 m of soil. The system will be developed for ground-based and subsequently unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based applications.
Develop RF acquisition system with real time processing.
Develop signal processing routines and calibration techniques when needed.
Participate to laboratory and field tests of the developed technology.
What is Required:
Recent Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering or geophysics.
Experience in signal processing.
Knowledge in numerical modelling, field programmable gate array (FPGA), and embedded design or operating systems is a plus.
Demonstrated experience in the research and development of hardware and/or software related to the acquisition of data. As such, experience with Python and/or other programing language is necessary. Experience with embedded Linux systems is a plus.
Motivation to tackle challenges involved in the development of new data acquisition platforms for sensing environmental, ecological, geophysical and hydro-biogeochemical properties.
Aptitude to bring new ideas, learn new techniques, evaluate various options and work independently and with a team to improve understanding and prediction of field scale terrestrial system behavior.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and experience communicating findings through presentations and publications.

This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
