TheEnergy Storage and Distributed Resources Division in Energy Technologies Area has an exciting opening for a Mechanical Engineering Postdoctoral Scholar to work on the Voltage-Controlled Thermal Switches and High-Throughput Thermal Methodology Project. The overall project goal is to develop dynamically tunable thermal switches which can be integrated within a building envelope. This position involves two main technical thrusts:
Develop new voltage-controlled thermal switches based on shape-memory materials, ion intercalation, and/or other physical phenomena.
Develop new optical metrology tools for high-throughput measurements of low conductivity porous materials.
What You Will Do:
Electro-thermal design, build, and testing of new voltage-controlled thermal switches based on shape-memory materials, ion intercalation, and/or other physical phenomena. This activity emphasizes the thermal design and measurement. The materials will be obtained from collaborators and/or commercial vendors.
Develop new experimental methods to characterize the thermal energy storage capabilities of active (e.g. voltage-controlled) materials. Apply these new methods to provide feedback to materials science collaborators on various innovative materials under development.
Analyze experimental data. This includes applying computer analysis and simulation programs to interpret experimental data.
Collaborate with materials scientists and vendors.
Collaborate with experimental and modeling teams across various divisions at LBNL and at UC Berkeley.
Collaborate in the development of research proposals and new scientific initiatives.
Write regular progress reports, publish journal papers in both fundamental science journals and applied technology journals, and present at conferences.
Participate in professional scientific activities, e.g., reviews of papers, research proposals, etc.
What is Required:
Recent Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or related field.
Hands-on experience in thermal device design and testing at the cm to sub-mm scale.
Experience with thermal conductivity measurements using electrical techniques for heating and thermometry, such as cut bar, hot disk, 3 omega method, etc.
Familiarity with calorimetry techniques such as DSC .
The ability to work as an independent researcher with a high level of scientific judgment and initiative.
Demonstrated ability to participate in collaborative efforts as a member of a diverse research team.
Good communication skills.

This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
