Department/College Description The Golisano Institute for Sustainability is an applied research organization at RIT whose mission is to undertake world-class education and research programs in sustainability with major foci on sustainable production, sustainable energy, sustainable mobility and ecologically friendly information technology systems. GIS is staffed by a passionate team of nearly 100 scientists, engineers, and administrative personnel who collaborate with companies locally, nationally, and globally and provide technical assistance and solutions to complex sustainability problems. It is headquartered on-campus in a state-of-the-art 75,000 sq. ft. LEED Platinum certified facility placing it among the top 1% of all green buildings in the United States today. Detailed Job Description
Golisano Institute for Sustainability is looking for an engineer or scientist with strong leadership skills, experimental and analytical materials background, and a passion for solving real-world problems. In our environment, researchers work on a wide variety of products and technologies, work with undergraduate and graduate students, and are engaged in collaborative research with leading companies on projects in diverse project areas such as: advanced manufacturing and remanufacturing, recycling, materials development and analysis, sustainability and sustainable design, prognostics development.
Develop proposals for external funding
Lead Research Teams, including supervision of students
Perform materials analysis for internal research, and for external customers, to support product failure analysis and industrial process quality improvement
Prepare and present/publish technical results of research
Develop enhanced laboratory capability for materials analysis, in particular non-destructive evaluation technologies
Expand existing research programs that support sustainable industrial development, with a focus on: remanufacturing, recycling, process material and energy efficiency, condition assessment and prognostics, and additive manufacturing.
Support sustainable product design efforts from materials perspective
Required Minimum Qualifications
Advanced degree (indicate specific field, if required): PhD in Materials Science or Engineering
10+ years work-experience (post-PhD) with industry, national lab, or equivalent in materials development, materials analysis, or process development
Demonstrated ability to conduct applied research, including proposal writing, project scoping, and research project leadership
Experience in analysis of materials and material failures
Analytical ability to solve challenging design/development problems
Significant experience in metals and metallurgy, with flexibility to work on diverse materials, technical challenges, and application domains is required
Demonstrated leadership skills
Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, for both technical and non-technical audiences
Authorized to work in the U.S. (citizen or permanent resident status)
Required Minimum Education Level PhD
