Berkeley Lab's Biological Systems and Engineering Division has an opening for a Research Associate. The Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (Berkeley Lab) has an exciting career opportunity available: This Research Associate – Fermentation / Recovery in the Biological Systems and Engineering Division at the Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU) has a role in assisting conducting research in multiple projects. These projects involve fermentation, recovery and purification of biofuels, and bio-based chemicals, proteins, enzymes and materials and are typically funded collaborations with industry partners, National Labs, and academic institutions. The RA will have the opportunity to work closely with industry companies as well as academic entities.
Essential to success is to have basic understanding of biochemical / chemical engineering unit operations applicable to advanced biofuel / biochemical / protein production. This individual will assist and execute tasks documented by SOPs/Batch records and analyze/report pilot process results for bench and pilot-scale fermentation (2 L to 300 L) and recovery processes (filtration, centrifugation, etc.) under the supervision of senior personnel. This individual will report to Sr. Process Engineer and work under EH&S regulation.
What You Will Do:
Perform basic process development activities including hands-on equipment operation and troubleshooting of process scale-up on the lab floor.
Utilize different techniques to assess on-line and real-time fermentation and recovery performance.
Write, review, and follow protocols to produce consistent reproducible results.
Maintain accurate and detailed scientific logbook of all experiments performed (electronically) ensuring that others could duplicate results.
Work as an individual contributor and as part of a larger team to assist Sr. Process Engineers with standard protocols.
Participate in scientific writing leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals and prepare presentations for conferences, etc.
Collect and analyze data and reporting findings in written and oral presentations for staff and clients.
Assist with general lab activities such as clean up, waste disposal, purchasing, etc.
Participate in group meetings and be able to present the data generated for specific project.
Work in collaboration with different teams including deconstruction, analytical, and facilities teams at the ABPDU.
Exhibit exemplary ethical conduct of integrity, honesty, and mutual respect, both intellectually and in interpersonal workplace interactions.
Strong computer and verbal and written communication skills.
What is Required:
BS in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related areas with 0-3 years' experience in fermentation/recovery at pilot scale or commercial facilities.
Ability to frequently lift 25 pounds and manipulate up to 50 pounds on occasion.
Experience in industrial process development, pilot plant operations, bioengineering, biochemistry and microbiology skills desirable.
Experience in handling, maintaining, and growing microorganisms and recovery/analysis of their products desirable.
Experience with analytical tools used for fermentation/recovery evaluation preferred.
Exhibit willingness to work cross-functionally and collaboratively, and learn new techniques associated with other functions of the ABPDU (e.g. deconstruction, analysis, and recovery).
Strong data management for sample archiving and maintaining good laboratory experimental records.
