Berkeley Lab's Computational Research Division has an opening for a career-track Research Scientist position to conduct fundamental and applied research one or more of the following areas: parallel computing, graph algorithms, computational biology, machine learning, and/or high-performance computing.
As part of the Performance and Algorithms Research (PAR) group, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop developing research opportunities and performing research in parallel and high-performance algorithms for one of more of the following areas: biology, machine learning, and graph algorithms. The staff member will focus on the development of new and novel methodologies, algorithms and software to tackle large-scale problems in the forefront of science, as part of an experienced team.
The Research Scientist will:
Design and implement parallel algorithms for computational biology, machine learning, or graph analytics.
Collaborate with domain scientists such as biologists and physicists to identify computational problems and map them to distributed-memory computing platforms.
Publish and present research results in high-impact journals and top conferences in the areas of computational biology, parallel computing, machine learning, and high-performance graph analytics.
Support supervision of postdocs and students working in those aforementioned areas.
Writing research proposals and reports.
Engagement with broader scientific community, societies, committees, and councils.
PhD related to Computer Science, Computational Sciences, Computational Biology, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent experience
Proficiency in C and/or C++ programming language.
Proficiency in one or more of the parallel libraries/languages: MPI, OpenMP, UPC, UPC++, CUDA.
Ability to articulate a research vision.
Demonstrated ability to design and implement parallel algorithms for computational biology, machine learning, or graph analytics, on shared- and distributed-memory parallel platforms.
Ability to write research proposals independently and as part of a diverse team.
·Ability to work productively both independently and as part of a diverse team.
Ability to work with domain scientist to translate their scientific questions into specific computational challenges, such as the need for new algorithms or high-performance computing software.
Demonstrated ability to publish in top journals and conferences.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Software engineering tools: make, cmake, revision control systems (such as git).
One or more of the popular scripting languages: Python, Perl, or R
Postdoctoral work in Computer Science or related areas that required high-performance computing.
Signs of scientific leadership potential via program committee membership and refereeing.
Record of outreach and educational activities related to science and technology.
This is a full-time, 2-year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
The position will be hired at a level depending on demonstrated Skills, Knowledge and Abilities.
Work Schedule: Full-time, M-F, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
